Research Projects
Vaccine-Inspired Therapies for Targeted Senescence Clearance

Programme(s) to which this project applies:

☑ MPhil/PhD ☒ MRes[Med] ☒ URIS

The accumulation of senescent cells over time drives chronic inflammation and tissue dysfunction, serving as a primary driver of the aging process. Inspired by recent breakthroughs in immunology, this pioneering project seeks to develop novel "anti-aging vaccines" that train the host's immune system to proactively recognize and clear harmful senescent cells.

The research will unfold in two main phases: First, we will identify and characterize senescence-associated antigens—specific proteins that are selectively expressed on the surface of, or secreted by, senescent cells. Second, we will formulate immunogens and vaccine delivery systems designed to provoke a robust, targeted adaptive immune response against these specific antigens. By conceptually vaccinating against the molecular drivers of aging, we aim to harness adaptive immunity to systematically eliminate senescent cells, thereby rejuvenating tissue microenvironments and reversing the detrimental effects of aging across various organ systems.
