Research Grants

  • Research grants awarded to Faculty members: HK$656.9m in total
  • RGC General Research Fund/Early Career Scheme: 54 projects (HK$58.5m)
  • Health and Medical Research Fund (Provisional): 74 projects (HK$89.5m)
  • Health and Medical Research Fund Commissioned Grant: 11 projects (HK$161.0m)
  • RGC Theme-based Research Scheme: 4 projects (HK$170.0m) (3 projects as PI and 1 project as Co-I)
  • Innovation and Technology Fund: 34 projects (HK$91.0m)

Fight Against COVID-19

  • Throughout the pandemic, Faculty researchers received a total of HK$437.6m in research grants and commissioned funds from the RGC, FHB and ITC, supporting 48 COVID-related studies.  As HKUMed continues to be at the forefront of COVID research, more funding is expected to be awarded.

Research Output

  • The Faculty’s refereed research output saw 1,888 items produced in 2020-2021, accounting for 42.7% of the University’s total of 4,425 refereed items. The output included important publications in The Lancet, Nature Reviews Microbiology, Chemical Society Reviews, Nature Medicine, Nature, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Neurology, Cell, Lancet Oncology, British Medical Journal, Annals of Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Cancer Cell, Advanced Materials, etc.
  • According to Clarivate Analytics, our researchers have published 279 Highly Cited Papers, and 16 staff members are listed as Highly Cited Researchers.  As of July 2021, among 139 HKU staff on the list of Top 1% scholar, 61 of them are from HKUMed, making up 43.9% of the Top 1% scholar in HKU.

What Research at HKUMed?

For more than 130 years, the Faculty has been at the forefront of medical research and the development of new clinical services that benefit mankind.

Academic staff members in the Faculty undertake a wide spectrum of research, from frontier basic medical sciences research to cutting-edge clinical research. They also supervise a large number of research postgraduate students from both local and overseas institutions. Clinical departments enjoy the flexibility of conducting and supervising research in both laboratories and clinical settings.

Programme & Support at HKUMed

The HKU Medical Faculty offers several research postgraduate programmes in which students are able to train alongside Faculty members, work in state-of-the-art laboratories, and participate in international exchange programmes.

The Medical Faculty shares with other Faculties in the University the common goal of imparting knowledge to students through research.  Every department in the Faculty actively participates in the training of research postgraduate students studying for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) degrees.
