Research Internship Scheme

URIS Summer 2022 and Part-time 2022-23 Rounds

Please be informed that due to the recent COVID-19 development, the Research Internship Scheme will not be offered for the Summer 2022 and Part-time 2022-23 rounds.

The Scheme aims to provide opportunities to the Faculty’s undergraduate students to gain hands-on experience on selected research project under the guidance of a professoriate staff member of the Faculty.  The internship may be undertaken on a full time basis during the summer for a minimum duration of one month or on a part-time basis concurrently with their studies.  Students who have completed the MRes[Med] may continue with their research on a part-time basis under this scheme.

Students may refer to the Research Postgraduate Prospectus of the Faculty and current research projects available for the scheme and contact the relevant supervisors/advisors for discussion and development of a research plan.

Undergraduate students of the Faculty who are interested in research are welcome to apply.

The Scheme may not be held concurrently with other research schemes such as, but not limited to, the below-mentioned.  The Scheme may be awarded to students subject to conditions of and satisfactory performance in their core programme of studies as deemed appropriate by the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee (FHDC).

  1. Can I contact and develop a research plan for a project with other supervisors who are not included in the list of projects?

Yes.  Research topics and supervisors are not limited to the provided list of research projects.  You may approach supervisors not on the list for a project.  However please note (1) only current research postgraduate student supervisors in the faculty are eligible to supervise under this scheme and (2) preference may be allocated to supervisors on the list due to limited internship quota.

  2. Can a few of my peers and I work on the same project with a supervisor?

No.  The maximum number of students each supervisor can supervise under this scheme is two.  The supervisor will be requested to provide justification should s/he propose to have both students working on the same project.

  3. Can I join in part-time mode during the summer round or full-time mode during the part-time round?

No.  You are expected to engage full-time during the summer round and part-time during the part-time round.  Internship activities should not interfere with your main programme of study.  As such, applications for beyond 6 hours per week will not be considered for the part-time round.

  4. My intended project period runs from the part-time through summer round period, can the internship award period be adjusted?

No.  You may consider applying for either round with a shortened project duration.

  5. Can I apply for both summer and part time rounds?

Yes.  You may apply for both rounds.  However due to limited internship quota, priority may be given to new students to join the scheme instead of awarding the same student for both rounds.

  6. Is there a minimum requirement of working days and hours?

The recommended hours for the summer round is full-time of up to 39 hours per week and for the part-time round 3-6 hours per week.

  7. Am I eligible as an international student?

Yes, you will be requested to provide a copy of the following documents with your application:

    • Photo page of your passport

    • Passport page with the stamped date of your first arrival in Hong Kong (for your programme of study)

    • Student visa (valid and sufficient to cover the proposed project period in full)

    • No objection letter
