Patients with paediatric hip disorders such as developmental dysplasia of the hip, Perthes disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, and neuromuscular hip instability often require hip reconstruction or salvage surgery, with a lifelong impact on patient's quality of life. Through identification of genetic, clinical, and radiological risk factors with follow-up to skeletal maturity beyond, we aim to delineate natural history, assist prognostication, and inform clinical and surgical management of these challenging group of orthopaedic disorders. Our group hosts one of the largest cohort territory-wide, with access to patients at Hong Kong Children's Hospital, Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital at Sandy Bay, Queen Mary Hospital, and the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital. Our group is in international collaboration in hip registries with centres in Canada and USA, and has a proven track record of publications in impactful orthopaedic journals.
Professor JSH Wong, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology
Janus joined the University of Hong Kong as clinical assistant professor in 2019, and completed his higher orthopaedic training in 2022, having passed the Joint Specialty Fellowship Examination by the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has attended overseas courses and training in Switzerland, Vienna, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and currently serves as Council Member at the Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Janus's research interests include paediatric growth modulation surgeries, hip disroders, skeletal dysplasias, and musculoskeletal infections. Janus has received international recognition for his work, from the application of artificial intelligence in hip fracture prediction, genomic analysis of patients with atypical femur fractures, to prognostication of residual dysplasia among patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip through long term follow-up, and has published in high impact orthopaedic journals.
Clinically, Janus practices general and paediatric orthopaedics and trauma surgery at Hong Kong Children's Hospital, Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital, Queen Mary Hospital, and The University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital. In addition to performing surgeries, clinical and basic science research, Janus is engaged in teaching doctors, medical students, and secondary school students, with his students having presented in conferences and published in international journals.
