Artificial Intelligence in Liver Cancer, Liver Imaging, Liver Histology and Beyond

Objective and Significance:

To investigate the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the diagnostic interpretation of liver cancer and advanced liver disease.

Research Plan and Methodology:

We have established an interdisciplinary research team investigating on how artificial intelligence can enhance the diagnostic accuracy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). These include:

  • The AI interpretation of computed tomography in diagnosing HCC;
  • The AI interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging in diagnosing HCC;
  • The AI predictability of medical imaging for histological HCC of prognostic significance
  • The digitization and AI interpretation of liver histopathology slides
  • The integration of AI in predicting clinical-related outcomes

We have also started preliminary work on non-HCC project, including a more accurate interpretation of liver fibrosis and other clinical non-liver projects that may benefit from AI.

Professor WWK Seto, Department of Medicine

Prof. Wai-Kay Seto graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 2003 and received his Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2010 from the Hong Kong College of Physicians. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Hong Kong in 2012. He is currently the Simon KY Lee Professor in Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine, and Principal Investigator of the State Key Laboratory of Liver Disease, the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. He is also the Chair of Division and Chief Physician in Gastroenterology of the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, Shenzhen, China; and Assistant Dean (Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Research Sub-Deanery), LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong
