Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy (CSM) is a progressive neurological disorder caused by chronic compression of the spinal cord and adjacent structures, leading to irreversible disability and diminished quality of life. Current conservative therapies often fail to halt disease progression, necessitating innovative approaches in cellular and pharmacological interventions.
Our lab is engaged in comprehensive CSM research, spanning from molecular mechanisms to clinical translation. Research activities include:
- Designing biomaterial-based drug delivery systems for neuroprotection.
- Investigating stem cell therapies (e.g., Bone marrow stem cells).
- Conducting clinical trials to evaluate novel pharmacological and cellular interventions.
We welcome passionate students with backgrounds in clinical medicine, neurobiology, molecular biology, biomaterials, or drug delivery to join our team. Experience in rodent surgery, bioinformatics, and computational modeling is a plus.
Professor GKH Shea, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology
Dr Graham Shea graduated from the University of Hong Kong as a member of the first cohort of candidates recruited to the combined MBBS / PhD programme. After completing his internship, he joined the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology as Clinical Assistant Professor and Resident under the Croucher Foundation Scheme for Young Clinical Academics. He received his FRCSEd (O&T) in 2019 and has a post-fellowship clinical and research interest in spine surgery and regenerative medicine.
