Prognostic uncertainty remains a critical challenge in managing spinal disorders such as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), and degenerative disc disease. Traditional clinical scoring systems lack predictive precision for individualized disease trajectories.
The project aims to develop interpretable Artificial Intelligence (AI) frameworks for:
- Predicting progression risks through multimodal data integration (imaging, biomechanics, genomics).
- Validating models through large-scale, multicenter clinical studies.
- Creating AI-powered tools for real-time clinical decision support.
We are looking for motivated students with expertise in machine learning, computational modeling, medical imaging, or biomechanics. A strong interest in clinical translation and interdisciplinary collaboration is highly valued.
Professor GKH Shea, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology
Dr Graham Shea graduated from the University of Hong Kong as a member of the first cohort of candidates recruited to the combined MBBS / PhD programme. After completing his internship, he joined the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology as Clinical Assistant Professor and Resident under the Croucher Foundation Scheme for Young Clinical Academics. He received his FRCSEd (O&T) in 2019 and has a post-fellowship clinical and research interest in spine surgery and regenerative medicine.
