  • Ample research funding - HKUMed receives financial support for research activities from various sources and achieves outstanding results in competitive external grants including the General Research Grants (GRF) exercise of the Research Grants Council and Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) of the Food and Health Bureau, securing over HK$517 million in 2020
  • World leading research - Over 70% of HKUMed’s research projects assessed by the University Grants Committee’s (URG) Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2020 were deemed to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, demonstrating our longstanding culture of research excellence across a multitude of disciplines
  • Our research provides relief in crises and direction on medical and health policies - As a global leader in infectious diseases research, HKUMed has been working tirelessly to increase scientific understanding of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus. This has included research into clinical care, diagnostics and testing, outbreak modelling and prediction, vaccine development, and more

What Research at HKUMed?

For more than 130 years, the Faculty has been at the forefront of medical research and the development of new clinical services that benefit mankind.

Academic staff members in the Faculty undertake a wide spectrum of research, from frontier basic medical sciences research to cutting-edge clinical research.  They also supervise a large number of research postgraduate students from both local and overseas institutions. Clinical departments enjoy the flexibility of conducting and supervising research in both laboratories and clinical settings.  

Programme & Support at HKUMed

The HKU Medical Faculty offers several research postgraduate programmes in which students are able to train alongside Faculty members, work in state-of-the-art laboratories, and participate in international exchange programmes.

The Medical Faculty shares with other Faculties in the University the common goal of imparting knowledge to students through research.  Every department in the Faculty actively participates in the training of research postgraduate students studying for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) degrees.
