Method Development and Application of Single-Cell Technologies

Single cell technologies have gained immense popularity in the recent past. There has been major technological advancement in how to efficiently capture individual cells in a high throughput manner. This closely accompanies development in omics assays which can be conducted on these captured cells. And finally, the loop completes with how to analyse the data thus generated. There are various projects available within the group which focus on the third component. That is method development and application of single cell technologies. We are currently studying cancers (both solid tumours as well as leukaemia) as well as immunological disorders.

Example projects:

  1. Somatic mutation calling for single cell DNA sequencing
  2. Interpreting functional heterogeneity and shift in tumour dynamics using single cell RNA sequencing

These projects are in collaboration with experimental and clinical partners. Each project has a dry lab component in analytics; as well as a wet lab component in validating novel findings. An individual student will be trained to conduct (and expected to master) one or the other aspect (with possibility of both). Dr A Javed, School of Biomedical Sciences

Dr Javed is an Assistant Professor in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. He received his PhD in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After doctorate, he joined Computational Biology Center at IBM TJ Research Center as a postdoctoral researcher where his work was part of the Genographic project. He then joined Genome Institute of Singapore (A*STAR) as a research associate and was promoted to research scientist in 2014. Dr Javed has co-authored more than 50 publications including senior authorships in Nature Methods, Nature Genetics and Blood. His research group focuses on method development and application in active collaboration with other clinical and experimental groups.
