About Us

Established in July 2026 under the umbrella of the School of Clinical Medicine, the Dermatology Unit (DERM) represents a timely and strategic development designed to strengthen HKUMed's capacity in dermatology teaching, training, clinical collaboration, and future academic development. We aim to enhance coordination, and align academic activities with service needs, laying a strong foundation for long‑term advancement in dermatology education and patient care.


Objective of the Dermatology Unit are:

  • to provide Dermatology training for Medical and Allied health professionals in Hong Kong and HKU-Shenzhen University Hospital;
  • to conduct evidence-based clinical trials/studies and initiate collaborative programmes for local and international researches;
  • to provide comprehensive diagnosis and multi-disciplinary treatment approach to patients with dermatological diseases;
  • to promote basic knowledge on general skin health and protection; and
  • to conduct local and international Scientific meetings and Courses for professional development and exchange.

Academic/ Clinical Meetings

  • Weekly Dermatology Grand Round
    Organized weekly basis for both academic and clinical purpose. Specialists, trainees and medical students are welcome to join.

  • Bi-monthly Clinical Dermatopathology Meeting 
    (co-joint with Department of Pathology, QMH, teleconference with Dermatology Division, Prince of Wales Hospital)

    Jointly held bi-monthly with Department of Pathology. Cases with academic and clinical interests will be presented and discussed in the meeting.

  • Monthly Journal Club/ Research meeting
    Held regularly with our academic staffs and research assistants. The Unit is devoted in researches including dermatology medicine and energy-based medicine.
 

Joint Scientific Activities

  • Certificate Course in Clinical Dermatology (since 2008)
    Jointly organized by the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care and the Dermatology Unit, School of Clinical Medicine, The University of Hong Kong annually. This postgraduate course aims to promote primary care physicians' knowledge and skills in care of the patients with dermatological problems, comprising 10 seminars to be conducted by specialists in dermatology, plastic surgery, paediatrics and microbiology using a problem-oriented-approach.   • Annual Scientific Meeting, Hong Kong College of Dermatologist (HKCD) & Hong Kong Society of Paediatric Dermatology (HKSPD), Nov 2018
    Jointly organised by HKCD and HKSPD, the meeting provided a platform for sharing views and updates on Dermatology, including acne and rosacea, psoriasis and eczema and cosmetics Dermatology.

  • 10th  5-Continent Congress (5-CC) for Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine, Shenzhen, China, 11-13 Jan 2019
    Held at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre, this 3-day international medical conference attracted experts from Americas ,Europe, Asia Africa and Australia shared new findings and advancement in dermatology.

  • Global Chinese Dermatology Summit 5-7 September 2025 Hong Kong
    Organised by organized by the HKCD, the Hong Kong Society of Dermatology & Venereology, Dermatology Divisions of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Dermatology Division of The University of Hong Kong, workshops were held to equip delegates with more basic and advanced dermatological procedures.

In-patient Services and Consultations
Located in Block K, South Wing, Queen Mary Hospital (QMH), our service is attended by Dermatology Specialists, and residents, covering in-hospital dermatology consultations (Adult & Paediatrics) in Queen Mary Hospital and HKIC cluster hospitals by tele-consultations.


Specialist Outpatient Clinics
Our Specialist Outpatient Clinic at QMH provides continuous care to discharged dermatological patients who require follow-up in the catchment area of the Hong Kong West Cluster. We provide consultations and comprehensive treatments for common skin conditions, with emphasis on hospital dermatology, and for patients with severe dermatoses including those with immunobullous dermatoses or inflammatory dermatoses requiring immunosuppressive therapy, post-marrow/organ transplant patients on long-term immunosuppressive with skin problem, or patients with severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions with long-term sequelae. 

Other minor surgery and procedures including diagnostic skin or nail biopsies are also available. Our phototherapy units provide Narrow-band UVB and Psoralen-UVA therapy to treat patients with severe psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and other skin disease. For patients with allergic contact dermatitis, skin patch tests are available.


Sub-Specialty Clinics
We commit to provide a comprehensive dermatology service and care to our patients in all age groups.  Apart from the general dermatology clinics, there are sub-specialty clinics. Our Integrated Dermatology clinic provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for patients with severe skin inflammatory disease such as psoriasis or eczema who require advanced therapy such as immunosuppressant or biologics therapy. Paediatric dermatology clinic provide service not only to common skin condition but also congenital/ genetic dermatoses with internal involvement, requiring dermatology specialists and paediatricians/ genetic clinicians’ attention and care such as Epidermolysis Bullosa with multiple disabilities.

Phototherapy & Laser Clinic
Phototherapy sessions are operated in QMH. Both Ultra-violet (UV) A & Narrow-band UVB are available.  Patients will attend on appointment only.

Wet-wrap therapy is located at Occupational therapy Unit to facilitate treatment at home or in-patient at day ward.
