School of Clinical Medicine

Message from the Director

Welcome to the new School of Clinical Medicine, which consolidates our wide array of clinical specialties under one roof and builds on their collective strengths to advance our capabilities ever further. This new structure will open the door to greater interdisciplinary collaboration and synergism to complement the development of HKUMed, advance clinical and biomedical research to achieve greater impact, and better serve the clinical needs of the community.

The School groups together 14 clinical disciplines, namely the Departments of Anaesthesiology, Clinical Oncology, Diagnostic Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine & Primary Care, Medicine, Microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Pathology, Psychiatry and Surgery. HKUMed is a world leader in many of these specialities and we will continue to nurture excellence as whole-heartedly as we have done in the past. Notably, this organisational redesign will enable us to create critical mass, achieve efficiency gains, and proliferate resources to enhance competitiveness and to grow.

Growth is an important aspect of this change. The synergies that are expected to arise will not only serve teaching, research and patient care, but also broaden career options for all staff, be it in academia, research and administration/technical support. We will be recruiting, too, to strengthen and diversify our talent pool.

Many of our departments have long histories, some to the founding days of HKUMed. Their individual identities are retained in recognition that this School is the sum of its individual parts plus more. I welcome you to learn more and discover the great wealth of expertise that is housed in the new School of Clinical Medicine.
