The MMedSc taught programme will be of one year duration, but there are provisions for part-time candidates (two years). Core Course lectures will be given mainly on Saturdays and weekday evenings. Specialised Course studies will be on certain days mutually arranged with the Department/School concerned and may be on weekdays. Part-time candidates must ensure that they will be able to obtain sufficient time-off from their employers in order to attend the course.
The curriculum, requiring a minimum of 69 credit units of prescribed work, includes appropriate topics grouped into core or specialised courses. The programme consists of:
Candidates will be required to attend the Induction Courses on (a) Dissertation Writing (7.5 hours), and (b) Clinical Trials and Biostatistics (2.5 hours). In addition, candidates are required to complete web-based learning courses web-based learning course for the Research Integrity programme developed by Epigeum Research Integrity Programme of Oxford University Press and pass the course(s) selected.
Amendments to the chosen core and specialised courses will only be allowed before the end of September each year.
Examinations and/or in-course assessments of each course and the dissertation will contribute towards the final evaluation. Successful completion of the curriculum requirements will lead to the award of the MMedSc degree.
The programme also permits applicants, who do not wish to seek the MMedSc qualification, to take only selected courses in the core subjects or Specialised Fields of Study or in both areas, or to do a whole Specialised Field. Candidates in this category will include:
Acceptance of such candidates will depend on the Departments/Schools conducting the courses. Upon satisfactory completion of the courses, a certificate of attendance will be issued.
The MMedSc degree is a quotable qualification approved by the Medical Council of Hong Kong. Some core/specialised courses have been accredited with CME/CPD points by some of the Colleges of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.
The composition fee for Master of Medical Sciences 2024/25 is $166,200 for full-time candidates and $83,100 p.a. for part-time candidates. Those who do not wish to pursue the MMedSc degree may take individual course at a rate of $2,410 per credit unit.
