Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
Internship Block

As a member of the Committee on Internship (CIC), the Faculty plays a key role in intern placements and training. The progress of interns is closely monitored by the Faculty Internship Committee.

Medical Education is a continuous process – from graduation to retirement. The pre-registration year (internship) provides the new doctor with opportunities to develop a range of general professional skills and attitudes necessary for the practice of medicine. The core consists of supervised general clinical experience, with increasing responsibility for the care of patients. Time should be provided for education by means of hospital based programmes on topics relevant to this stage of the doctor’s training and also time allowed for private study.

For queries and/or feedback about the internship arrangements, including the Enhanced Pre-internship Block, please email: intern@hku.hk

If you encounter any difficulties during your internship year, please feel free to contact:

The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Hospital Authority (HA) jointly organise structured activities to prepare medical graduates for their one-year internship that commences in July. A three-week Enhanced Pre-internship Block consists of activities including:

  • Joint orientation day
  • Web based training
  • Classroom/on site training sessions including:
    • Simulation training
    • CMS training
    • AHA BLS and ACLS resuscitation training
  • A 3-week attachment to the hospitals where students will have their internship to facilitate the pre-interns in familiarising with the working environment and clinical staff of the department of their first intern training rotation for better orientation and transition to interns at the start of internship.

For medical graduates outside Hong Kong, internship training is provided only to those who passed the Licensing Examination of The Medical Council of Hong Kong (MCHK). Visit MCHK’s Licensing Examination Information Portal for the latest information regarding the Licensing Examination.

When the examination is completed successfully, you will serve a 12-month period of Internship (Housemanship) with the graduates of both Medical Schools in Hong Kong in the accredited training hospitals in Hong Kong. Once this is successfully completed, you will be eligible for full registration with MCHK.

Please direct your enquiries regarding the Licensing Examination to The Licentiate Committee Secretariat of The Medical Council of Hong Kong
