On 28 September 2025, HKUMed and the HKU Medical Alumni Association (HKUMAA) co-hosted a private screening of the acclaimed film My First of May《無名指》at Emperor Cinemas Times Square. This event, initiated by MBBS alumnus Dr Kingsley Chan (陳厚毅), drew an impressive turnout of nearly 250 alumni, students, faculty members and medical professionals dedicated to caring for patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), creating a meaningful opportunity for the HKU medical community to come together.
The film tells the story of a young girl living with SMA and the mending of a broken relationship. It highlights the challenges faced by patients with rare diseases and their caregivers, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy in healthcare. Professor Chak-sing Lau (劉澤星), Dean of HKUMed, remarked that a doctor's role goes beyond medical expertise; it is also essential to understand the emotions and struggles of patients and their loved ones.
Attendees also had the privilege of hearing from the film's producer, Siu Mei (小美), and director, James Hung (孔令政), who shared their creative journey and the message behind the film, aiming to raise awareness about rare diseases and to foster greater support for patients and their caregivers.
