The medical journey of Henry Chan Hei, a year 3 MBBS student, began with a Biomedical Sciences degree at the Faculty, which gave him a solid grasp of anatomy, physiology, and pathology and a unique advantage when admitted to the MBBS programme. ‘My first degree taught me how to study efficiently,’ said Henry. ‘But more importantly, the previous research experience trained me to think critically, especially when interpreting medical literature.’

But it was his Enrichment Year at the University of Cambridge that truly expanded his horizons.

Immersed in an MPhil programme focused on infection biology and molecular immunology, he deepened his passion for immunology, which he had developed during his first degree. He also gained hands-on experience in translating scientific knowledge into real-world solutions. ‘The MPhil pushed me to ask deeper questions—a mindset I now use daily in my medical studies,’ he reflected. Studying abroad also built resilience, preparing him for the rigours of clinical training. ‘More, I can meet peers from diverse backgrounds, all united by their passion for their fields,’ he said.

Now in the MBBS programme, Henry sees his dual background as his greatest strength. ‘While my first degree gave me scientific rigour; medicine teaches me the importance of patient care,’ he explained. Together, they guide me towards my goal of becoming a clinician-scientist,’ he explained. His advice to his peers: ‘Use the Enrichment Year to explore boldly—there is nothing to lose by challenging yourself and pushing your boundaries.’
