HKUMed alumna Dr Cecilia Fan Yuen-man （范婉雯） (MBBS 1991) was recognised as one of the National Outstanding Individuals in Foreign Medical Aid at a national recognition ceremony on 29 December 2023 for her participation in the HKSAR search and rescue team's work in quake-stricken Turkey in early 2023.
Two other distinguished alumni, Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan （張竹君） (MBBS 1991) and Professor Dennis Lam Shun-chiu （林順潮） (MBBS 1984), were conferred Honorary Doctorate degrees in Social Sciences by Hong Kong Shue Yan University on 27 November 2023.
Dr Chuang has dedicated over two decades to the Department of Health, specialising in monitoring and preventing infectious diseases. She played pivotal roles in managing outbreaks such as the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome in 2013, the enterovirus 71 epidemic in 2008, a human streptococcus suis outbreak in Sichuan, China in 2005, and the SARS outbreak in 2003.
A pioneer in ophthalmology, Professor Lam was commended for his passion for medicine and philanthropy. He has made outstanding contributions in medicine, education and research and is actively involved in raising awareness of eye care and organising free eye examinations and surgery for those in need.
