Department of Surgery, SClinMed
This year, the Masterclass concentrated on esophageal cancer. Despite improvement in surgical techniques and perioperative care, multimodal therapy, early diagnosis and treatment, esophageal cancer remains a disease with a poor prognosis. Squamous cell esophageal cancer has the highest incidence in East Asian countries, while Barrett’s adenocarcinoma has become the predominant cell type in western countries. The Department of Surgery hosted this one-day conference on various aspects of the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of this deadly cancer.
The hybrid conference was free to all around the world to attend virtually, while local participants had the option of joining in person. In addition, there was a cadaver workshop on minimally invasive esophagectomy for those interested to have hands-on experiences in performing this difficult operation in small groups.
