CMEL organised a series of seminars from Oct 2022 to Apr 2023. Held on 31 March 2022, The ‘Annual Review of Hong Kong Health Law 2023 & Book Launch of Healthcare Law and Ethics: Principles & Practices’ was intended to provide an overview of significant and noteworthy regulatory and case law developments affecting medical and health law in Hong Kong.
Organised by the Professionalism and Ethics Committee, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and co-organised by CMEL, the ‘Webinar on Medical Manslaughter: An Overview and Case Studies’ was held on 4 February 2022 to clarify the legal rules and principles regarding ‘medical manslaughter’ (i.e. Gross Negligence Manslaughter in a medical context) through the discussion of relevant cases from Hong Kong and UK.
The Public Seminar ‘Preservation of Dignity in the Terminally Ill’ was held on 24 November 2022. In the case of HKSAR v Kwok Wai-yin [2022] HKCFI 2989, the accused has been sentenced to one-year probation for killing his cancer-stricken wife, while he himself suffered from a major depressive disorder. When Mr Justice Albert Wong sentenced the accused, he noted the tough situation of patients and helpers and mentioned that it was for the government to consider whether to orchestrate the way forward. In this webinar, a panel of scholars will discuss this case, as well as advance directives and euthanasia in a wider context.
‘Mediation in Hong Kong’: Focus on Medical and Dental Disputes’ was held on 20 October 2022. The speaker and commentators provided an overview of the book, with a focus on medical and dental disputes. They also discussed how healthcare providers who were not legally trained and non-healthcare professionals (lawyers in particular) could use this book.
