The research paper entitled ‘A familial cluster of pneumonia associated with the 2019 novel coronavirus indicating person-to-person transmission: a study of a family cluster’, supervised by Professor Yuen Kwok-yung (袁國勇), Henry Fok Professor in Infectious Diseases and Chair of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology and Dr Jasper Chan Fuk-woo (陳福和), Clinical Associate Professor of same Department from the School of Clinical Medicine, was selected as one of the 34 landmark papers by The Lancet in 200 years.

Conducted by Microbiologists HKUMed from HKUMed, in collaboration with HKU-SZH, this research provided the first evidence that mild or asymptomatic patients of COVID-19 could transmit the virus to others and is the only selected paper from Hong Kong. Professor Leo Poon Lit-man (潘烈文), Co-Director of HKU-Pasteur Research Pole, Professor and Division Head of Public Health Laboratory Sciences, School of Public Health, was awarded the Pasteur Network LP200 Prize - a special prize in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Pasteur.

The award presentation ceremony organised by the Institut Pasteur (Paris) was held on 26 January 2023. According to Rebecca F Grais, Executive director of the Pasteur Network, the award ‘recognises the essential contributions of Professor Poon to preparedness, research, collaborations, and commitment to the Pasteur Network, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pr. Poon embodies Louis Pasteur’s vision of science without borders.’

The research project led by Professor Liu Pengtao (劉澎濤), Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences and Managing Director of the Centre for Translational Stem Cell Biology entitled ‘A novel human cellular system for studying normal ageing and anti-ageing drug screen’ received the US National Academy of Medicine Healthy Longevity Catalyst Award (Hong Kong) 2022.

The Award rewards bold, new, potentially transformative ideas to improve the physical, mental, or social well-being for people as they age, and in a measurable and equitable way.

Professor Mak Tak-wah(麥德華, Honorary Professor, Department of Pathology, School of Clinical Medicine, was selected for 2023 Pezcoller Foundation- American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) International Award for his extraordinary achievement in cancer research.

According to Margaret Foti, PhD, MD (hc), Chief Executive Officer of the AACR, ‘Dr Mak is a pioneer in cancer immunology, and he continues to break important new ground […] His discoveries have helped to provide the scientific foundation for the immunotherapy revolution, which has saved and extended so many lives from cancer.’

Professor Chan Ying-sing (陳應城), Senior Advisor to the Dean of Medicine and Director (Development and Infrastructure) of the Faculty; Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences, was elected as President of the Asian-Pacific Society for Neurochemistry (APSN) (2022-24). He was also selected as Chair of Neurobiology Commission, International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) (2022-25).

Dr Amy Cheung Yim-ling (張炎鈴), Honorary Clinical Tutor of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine, won the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) Research Awards – Best Paper from Female Researcher / Clinician Award for research paper entitled ‘Metal-on-Highly crosslinked polyethylene in total hip arthroplasty – A winning combination at 15-20 years of follow-up’.

Dr Jason Chang Pui-yin 鍾培言, Chairperson and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine, received the English Presentation Award – Gold Prize at the 52nd Japanese Society for Spine Surgery and Related Research (JSSR) for the research paper entitled ‘Immediate versus gradual brace weaning for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: A randomized controlled trial’.

The ECMO programme of Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) Adult Intensive Care Unit, a joint project by QMH and Critical Care Medicine Unit, School of Clinical Medicine, was awarded Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Award of Excellence in Extracorporeal Life Support – Gold Level.

Represented by Professor Leo Poon Lit-man (潘烈文), Co-Director of HKU-Pasteur Research Pole, The HKU-Pasteur Research Pole received the Grand Prix France-Hong Kong Knowledge Transfer Award 2022 from Bouygues Construction, sponsor of the event, together with Mr Gerard Millet, Vice President & Honorary Secretary of The Légion d’Honneur Club Hong Kong Chapter, at a ceremony hosted by the Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau.

The Grand Prix France-Hong Kong was created by LePetitJournal.com and supported by the Consulate General of France to reward collaborations contributing positively to the influence, reputation or relationship of France and Hong Kong, in the fields of culture, entrepreneurship, gastronomy, human resources, education and sustainable development.

Dr Hu Yong (胡勇), Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine and his team’s research paper entitled ‘State-of-the-art non-invasive brain-computer interface for neural rehabilitation: A review’ received the Best Paper Award 2022 presented by the Journal of Neurorestoratology (the Journal).

Dr Hu himself received the Annual Contribution Award 2022 in recognition of his significant contributions to the Journal.

Professor Herbert Kwok Chun-wang(郭宏駿), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, received the Assembly Education Award [of the Respiratory Structure and Function (RSF) Assembly and Respiratory Infections (non-tuberculous) Assembly] at the 26th Congress of the Asia Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) 2022.

Dr Elaine Lee Yuen-phin (李燕蘋, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, School of Clinical Medicine, was elected as Fellow of the International Cancer Imaging Society.

Dr Kathy Leung Sze-man (梁詩敏), Assistant Professor, Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health was named one of the '11 Early-Career Researchers to Watch' by Nature Medicine in December 2022. In the next 5 years, Dr Leung hopes her research could ‘contribute to improving population health and, thus, social recovery in a post-pandemic world’.

Dr Victor Leung Yu-leong (梁宇亮), Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine, and his team won the Best Poster Presentation Award - Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society Asia–Pacific Chapter Conference 2022 (TERMIS-AP) for the research paper entitled ‘Small molecule mediated intervertebral disc repair via regulation of proteoglycan metabolism.’

Dr Philip Li Hei 李曦), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, joined the Board of Directors of Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (APAAACI).

Dr Amy Lo Cheuk-yin勞卓妍), Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine and her team's research paper entitled ‘Both non-coated and polyelectrolytically-coated intraocular collagen-alginate composite gels enhanced photoreceptor survival in retinal degeneration’ was published in Biomaterials (volume 293) in February 2023.

Dr Kendrick Co Shih (施愷廸, Clinical Associate Professor of Practice, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine was elected as Fellow of World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences (WCRS).

Dr Pauline Yeung Pui-ning 楊珮寧)Clinical Assistant Professor, Critical Cares Medicine Unit, School of Clinical Medicine received the Assembly Education Award at the 26th Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) held in Seoul, Korea. 

Dr Yeung was also selected as one of the Outstanding Authors by the Journal of Thoracic Disease.

Dr Zhao Hanjun (趙旵軍), Research Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, received The 2022 Best Papers Award - First Place presented by Emerging Microbes & Infections.

Professor Chen Zhiwei (陳志偉), Director of AIDS Institute and Professor of Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, received the ‘Most Picked Award’ – 2021 Chinese Scientists with Cell Press for the research paper entitled ‘Robust SARS-CoV-2 infection in nasal turbinates after treatment with systemic neaturalizing antibodies’.

Research papers selected for this Award were nominated by the editorial team of Cell Press and reviewed by an expert committee on the paper’s number of downloads, citations and breakthroughs.

Professor Yiu Kai-hang (姚啟恒, Clinical Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, was elected as Vice Chairman of the Advisory Expert Committee of Arrhythmia Branch, Guangdong Precision Medicine Application Society. 

Dr Wang Ning (王寧), Assistant Professor, School of Chinese Medicine, was elected ‘Qi-Huang Young Scholar’ by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in December 2022.

The Qi-Huang Young Scholar Programme selects 100 young scholars in China with outstanding achievements in Chinese Medicine.

Professor Daniel Chan Tak-mao(陳德茂), Chair Professor and Yu Chiu Kwong Professor in Medicine; Chief of Nephrology Division, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, was elected as President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians. 

 

Professor Stephanie Ma Kwai-yee (馬桂宜), Professor and Associate Director (Knowledge Exchange and Global), School of Biomedical Sciences received the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship 2023. The Fellowship scheme provides opportunities for awarded scientists to be relieved of all teaching and administrative duties for a period of one year to do full-time research in Hong Kong.

Professor Kenneth Wong Kak-yuen 黃格元Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery, School of Clinical Medicine, and his HKWC Neonatal Surgical Service Team, QMH, was selected as one of the Outstanding Teams at the HA Outstanding Staff & Teams and Young Achievers Award 2023.

Professor Kenneth Wong Kak-yuen (黃格元), Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery, School of Clinical Medicine, was appointed as Hong Kong Convention Ambassador (2023-24) by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Dr Will Chan Yap-hang 陳熠恒), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, was awarded the Sir David Todd Memorial Scholarship by Hong Kong College of Physicians.

 

AR Hodgson Award

Dr Steve Cheung Man-hong (張文康), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of orthopaedics and traumatology, SClinMed, for the research paper entitled ‘Beta-Lactam Antibiotic Allergy is a newly identified, independent and treatable risk factor for periprosthetic joint infection following TKA: a 28-year retrospective cohort study of 4800 cases’

 

 

Arthur Yau Award

Dr Kenny Kwan Yat-hong (關日康), Clinical Associate Professor, Department of orthopaedics and traumatology, SClinMed, for the research paper entitled ‘Lycium barbarum extract can enhance functional recovery after decompression in a preclinical rat model of cervical spondylotic myelopathy’

 

 

Best Paper Award for Associate Member

Dr Prudence Cheung Wing-hang (張穎恒), Research Assistant Professor, Department of orthopaedics and traumatology, SClinMed, for the research paper entitled ‘Immediate versus gradual brace weaning in the clinical management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis – a randomized controlled trial’

 

Dr Aya El Helali, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Oncology, Centre of Cancer Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine was awarded the Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation Fellowship.

Dr Jojo Kwok Yan-yan (郭欣欣), Assistant Professor, School of Nursing, received the 2022 Hong Kong Society of Behavioral Health (HKSH) Early Career Award.

Dr Philip Li Hei (李曦), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, was elected as Vice-President of Hong Kong Institute of Allergy.

Dr Abraham Wai Ka-chung (衛家聰), Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, was named Distinguished Young Fellow by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM) in December 2022.

Dr Khong Mei-li(孔美麗), Assistant Lecturer, School of Biomedical Sciences / Senior E‑learning Instructor of School of Clinical Medicine and Dr Abraham Wai Ka-chung (衛家聰) , Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, received the Early Career Teaching Award at the University’s 2022 Teaching Excellence Awards.

Dr Pauline Yeung Pui-ning (楊珮寧), Clinical Assistant Professor, Critical Care Medicine Unit, School of Clinical Medicine was awarded the Rosie Young 90 Medal for Outstanding Young Woman Scholar. Dr Yeung also received the Best Abstract in Clinical Research award at the 28th Medical Research Conference organised by the Department of Medicine.

Dr Yuan Shuofeng (袁碩峰), Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, received the HKU Young Innovator Award 2022 presented by the Knowledge Exchange (KE) Executive Group. The Award is established to recognise outstanding Faculty members whose innovations demonstrate exceptionally high potential impact with transformative results to foster development.

Dr Wong Tak-man (黃德民), Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine, Dr Yang Jian (楊鑒), Senior Lecturer, School of Biomedical Sciences, and Dr Pauline Yeung Pui-ning (楊珮寧), Clinical Assistant Professor, Critical Care Medicine Unit, School of Clinical Medicine, were awarded the Faculty Teaching Medal 2022.

 

  • Dr Lydia Cheung Wai-ting (張慧婷), Assistant Professor, Biomedical Sciences received the Outstanding Young Researcher Award.
  • Dr Jack Wong Chun-ming (黃俊銘), Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, School of Clinical Medicine, received the Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award.
  • Dr Yuan Shuofeng (袁碩峰), Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine and team won the Research Output Prize 2021-22 for Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.
