On June 14, 2025, we co-hosted a public seminar with the Hong Kong Scoliosis Awareness Group, HKCOS, Kwong Wah Hospital and other associations as part of International Scoliosis Awareness Month. The event featured expert talks, live demonstrations and heartfelt patient stories to raise awareness of scoliosis and its evolving treatments. The seminar began with opening remarks by Dr Graham Shea Ka Hon, Dr Tang Kam Shing and Dr Wong Kam Kwong. Presentations covered non-operative treatments, Schroth exercises and robot-assisted spinal surgery. A mid-session break included brace exhibits, exercise demos and an art showcase by scoliosis patients.
The second half featured moving stories from three patients: Cat, who shared her journey through spinal surgery; Kason, who spoke about his recovery and return to sports after treatment; and a Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) patient, who discussed the benefits of this newer, less invasive technique. Their experiences highlighted the emotional and physical challenges of scoliosis and the hope offered by modern treatments. A panel discussion moderated by Dr Shea and the Hong Kong Scoliosis Awareness Group (HKSAG) addressed key concerns, such as surgical timing, safety, recovery and pregnancy. The seminar closed with reflections from Dr Wong Kam Kwong.
