When Isabella Iu Kwan-ying was in her first year of the MBBS programme, she heard about a senior who had spent his Enrichment Year studying at Le Cordon Bleu. This deeply inspired her. As a film enthusiast, she decided to follow her passion and spent her Enrichment Year at the New York Film Academy (NYFA), studying cinematography.

Over the course of the year, Isabella earned a diploma in cinematography, mastering lighting, rigging, equipment, and camera operation. She worked on diverse projects—from advertisements and music videos to short films—honing her craft through hands-on experience. One of her most unforgettable moments was braving the winter cold, waking at 1 am to drive to a beach in New Jersey to film a sunrise scene. ‘The freezing wind made it hard to even keep my eyes open,’ she recalled, ‘but seeing the final product made all the challenges worth it.’ Throughout the year, she not only gained valuable skills, but also had the opportunity to collaborate with industry professionals.

Isabella also learnt the value of time management, meticulous preparation, and teamwork—lessons that gave her a deeper appreciation for structured workflows and problem-solving under pressure, which directly benefitted her medical studies and future career. ’That experience didn't just enrich my life—it reaffirmed my commitment to becoming an exceptional doctor,’ she said.
