Dr Ryan Lee's path to medicine exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary learning. After enrolling in HKUMed's Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences in 2016, he secured one of only two articulation spots in the MBBS programme in 2018—graduating with both degrees in eight years. His unique trajectory allowed him to alternate between biomedical sciences and clinical training, deepening his understanding of medicine from multiple perspectives.

‘My biomedical background gave me a head start in the MBBS programme,’ said Ryan, ‘I could connect lab research to patient care, which made complex concepts click faster.’ He credits his dual training for fostering a holistic approach to medicine. His international experience—from clinical research at the University of British Columbia to attending ophthalmology lectures at Yale and Cambridge—further shaped his passion for patient health, leading to his new role as Medical Officer in Ophthalmology at Prince of Wales Hospital in July this year.

Ryan also thrived in research during his studies, contributing to projects on genetic screening and eye diseases under HKUMed faculty and earning accolades for his presentations at scientific conferences. His story mirrors the advantages of the Faculty's new four-year MBBS track for first-degree holders, which trains doctors while fostering research excellence through the optional MRes[Med].
