After having met Dr Marco Ho through the HKUMAA 130 Mentorship Programme, I was fortunate enough to get to sit in on some of his consultations at his clinic at the HKSH. Through the attachment, I was able to learn more about his subspecialty of paediatric immunology, allergy and infectious disease. More importantly, this experience taught me the importance of good rapport with patients. I remember the amount of patience and time Dr Ho gave each of the patients, even if it meant going overtime into his lunch time. He has taught me the attitude that I should have to become a good doctor.
I also have fond memories of him showing me his handwritten logbook from when he was doing his specialty training and telling me stories of his professional journey. And of course, who could forget the chats in between patients where he would offer me chocolates from his stash!
Although my attachment at his clinic has now ended, we still keep in touch with friendly holiday greetings and occasional catch ups whenever I visit the HKSH. I remembered seeing a picture of Dr Ho in one of my lecture slides and immediately forwarding it to him, to which he reminisced about his good old days in the immune transplant team.
Dr Ho has been a mentor whom I know I can speak to if I ever need advice and a great role-model for my professional life.
