Established in 1986 by Doctor Charles Mérieux, the ‘Cent Gardes’ symposium was one of the very first international scientific

events of its type on the subject of HIV / AIDS. This biennial symposium gathers together international speakers of the highest level:

scientific experts from public and private research, from hospitals and universities, and representatives from the health

authorities of many countries.They present their work in the field of HIV / AIDS.

The following themes are also covered: world epidemiological situation, strategies for the prevention and control of infection,

With the endorsement of HKU-LKS Faculty of Medicine and the Advisory Council on AIDS of Hong Kong Government, AIDS Institute successfully hosted the Hong Kong Symposium on HIV/AIDS 2012 in collaboration with Hong Kong AIDS Foundation. Professor SP Lee, Dr. CH Leong and Dr. Susan Fan made opening remarks. Over 200 participants attended the symposium including scientists, physicians, nurses, students, government officers and AIDS activists of various non-government organizations of Hong Kong and mainland China. The honorary director of AIDS Institute, Dr. David Ho gave the keynote speech entitled “Passive Immunization for HIV Prevention”.  Other guest speakers including Drs. Robert Schooley, George Shaw, Linqi Zhang, KH Wong, Patrick Li, Xiaoping Chen, shared their latest discoveries on HIV prevention and treatment. This symposium is an in time response to the latest record high of HIV infections in Hong Kong

China Minister of Health, Chen Zhu, visited the HKU AIDS Institute. Dr. Zhiwei Chen reported to him about our institute's

effort in AIDS vaccine and microbicide research under the national 11th-five-year mega project. Minister Chen Zhu

encourages the HKU team to collaborate more closely with mainland scientists and make major and direct contributions,

especially in the upcoming 12th-five-year mega project where HIV AIDS study is a research area of great importance.

Prof. Linqi, ZHANG--Team leader of the 11-5 year Mega Program for HIV/AIDS Mucosal Vaccine paid a visit to our Institute.

We are part of the program. During the visit, Prof. Zhang discussed with Prof. KY Yuen and Dr. Zhiwei Chen about ongoing

research collaboration and identified new areas. Sir John Irving Bell--Immunologist and geneticist resides in the UK,

President of the Academy of Medical Sciences and holds the Regius Chair of Medicine at Oxford University, UK.
