Penicillin Allergy Assessment

HKUMed Immunology & Allergy Clinic offers comprehensive drug allergy review by trained pharmacists and specialist in Immunology & Allergy.

Labelled with penicillin allergy? It Could be wrong!

Penicillin allergy is the most commonly labelled allergy worldwide.
90% of these labels are found to be incorrect after formal allergy evaluation.
5 Years later, most people with penicillin allergy lose their sensitivity.

Why is the penicillin allergy test important?

  • If your penicillin allergy label is found to be false after Oral Challenge, you can be delabelled from penicillin allergy on your health records.
  • This will allow the use of life-saving penicillin when you need them, with reduced healthcare costs, hospital admissions, and length of stay.
  • It also means that you will have broader and more appropriate treatment options if you have an infection, or require antibiotics before an operation.

Procedure of Penicillin Allergy Assessment

  1. Comprehensive Screening Review (Walk-in)
Following evaluation and triage by trained pharmacists, our Specialist in Immunology and Allergy will review your case to determine the most appropriate  allergy testing for you.

  2. Penicillin Allergy Test (1-2 Hours) Oral Challenge (Drug Provocation Test)

  3. Post-test Counselling (Also available Online)
After the completion of allergy assessment and confirmation of negative allergy test result, a drug allergy delabelling letter would be issued.

If you are labelled with penicillin allergy, or suspect that you may be allergic to penicillin, we can offer you drug allergy tests. Please contact us for enquiry or making appointments.
