The Faculty aspires to be a global leader in teaching and learning, research and discovery, clinical service and knowledge exchange in the professional domains of medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, Chinese medicine and in the biomedical and social sciences that underpin these professions. At the same time, we aim to nurture outstanding students who would go on to serve the people locally, nationally and around the world, thus leading to sustainable social development through better health. HKUMed is the largest faculty with HKU, with around 450 full-time academic staff and 1,500 research and research-related support personnel. There are approximately 3,300 undergraduate and 1,600 postgraduate students. The Faculty receives substantial financial support for research activities from competitive grants, commissioned grants, contract research grants, conference grants, HKUMed is Hong Kong’s oldest and most prestigious faculty of medicine and a leader in pioneering medical education, training and research. It has continually set the benchmark for excellence in Asia, and ranked in 20th place worldwide for clinical and health subjects in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Ranking. In terms of its exceptional research, 17 HKUMed academics were named as “Highly Cited Researchers” by Clarivate Analytics in 2021, a record high for the Faculty. The Medical Campus on Sassoon Road accommodates teaching departments/ schools and their research laboratories, as well as state-of-the-art facilities which are among the best in the world. The Faculty is also anticipating the launch of our new CryoEM facility and the HKUMed Laboratory of Cellular Therapeutics on advanced therapeutic products (ATPs) and stem cell-based therapy projects with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance. The GMP facility will serve as the first training centre in Hong Kong for qualified key personnel, in preparation for the future establishment of more GMP-compliant ATP manufacturing facilities in the region. 140 FOR 140 GREAT MINDS FOR GRAND CHALLENGES

To support our thriving agenda, we aim to recruit 140 professoriate staff by 2027, when we will celebrate our 140th anniversary. The “140 for 140” recruitment campaign seeks outstanding scholars across multiple disciplines and at all ranks. Four well-funded programmes open abundant opportunities to the right candidates. • Academic recruits at all ranks are being supported by the HKU Global Professoriate Recruitment Campaign. For this, HKUMed seeks candidates across 10 strategic areas including six emerging fields with potential for scientific and scholarly breakthroughs: data science/big data/AI applications in biomedicine and health; structural, synthetic and computational biology; stem cell and regenerative medicine; cancer biology and therapeutics; emerging infectious diseases; and global health. All ranks may apply, with the possibility of direct tenure to Associate/Full Professor. HKUMed is embarking on a major recruitment drive to support our expanding research portfolio and clinical and teaching activities. • Outstanding scholars are also sought to support HKUMed Innovation Hubs, in which we are working with leading partner institutions from around the world to apply genomics, big data and advanced technologies to deepen our understanding of viruses and cancers and develop cuttingedge treatments. The five transdisciplinary R&D clusters seek expertise to support and drive HKUMed’s goals forward. The clusters include the Centre for Immunology and Infection; Centre for Oncology and Immunology; Centre for Virology, Vaccinology and Therapeutics; Centre for Translational Stem Cell Biology; and Laboratory of Data Discovery for Health. • Hong Kong Government’s Global STEM Professorship Scheme is supporting local universities to recruit outstanding overseas research talents at mid-career for academic positions in Hong Kong. The scheme was announced during the Chief Executive’s Policy Address in November 2020 undertaking generous funding support for 100 such posts across the SAR. • In addition, HKUMed is continuing with its regular, on-going exercises to recruit both up-andcoming and experienced clinical and research professoriate staff with outstanding records of achievement, to replace natural attrition, in all areas of clinical medicine and surgery, as well as biomedical sciences, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and Chinese medicine. HKUMed’s position as a world leader in research was demonstrated by our work on COVID-19, where our scholars provided some of the earliest key insights on the culprit virus and its spread, and were sought out by governments and organisations around the world for advice and guidance.
