Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (BChinMed)

The Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (BChinMed) programme is a 6-year full-time degree programme, aiming to provide systematic and professional training to students for becoming competent Chinese Medicine Practitioners who are able to provide Chinese Medicine healthcare service to the community as well as to meet the challenges of the modernization of Chinese Medicine. The main features of the curriculum include:

  1. Focus on Chinese Medicine teaching supplemented with biomedical sciences knowledge
  2. Frequent and early clinical training

  4. Broadening students’ horizons beyond professional study
  5. Arousing students’ interests in scientific research
  6. Trilingual teaching medium

BChinMed students will spend their first five years on campus studying systematically a full curriculum of Chinese Medicine courses, modern biomedical courses and general education courses which are taught by the School of Chinese Medicine, the Faculty of Medicine and the relevant departments of the University. The School is dedicated to providing early clinical contact to its students. Clinical attachments involve over 320-hour clinical observation of out-patient practice under the supervision of teachers and the completion of medical case reports arranged at the 7 Chinese Medicine Clinical Centres for Teaching and Research that are directly under or affiliated to HKU. Students in the sixth year will undertake a clinical clerkship in affiliated teaching hospitals of the first-tier TCM University in Mainland China. Field trip and Chinese Medicine dispensary practicum will also be arranged for students to study the indigenous TCM herbs in the wilds under natural conditions in Mainland China and practical experience at Chinese Medicine dispensary.

The BChinMed curriculum covers

  • Chinese Medicine Foundation Courses;
  • Chinese Medicine Classical Texts Courses;
  • Chinese Medicine Clinical Courses;
  • Biomedical Sciences Courses (including western medicine bedside training);
  • Disciplinary Elective Courses;
  • Field Trip and Chinese Medicine Dispensary Practicum;
  • Chinese Medicine Clinical Attachments and Clinical Clerkship at Chinese Medicine hospitals to be arranged on the Mainland;
  • Common Core Curriculum Courses; and
  • Language Enhancement Courses.
