Delivering Medicine Beyond Culture and Disciplines

Foreword

On behalf of the Student Organizing Committee, it is my pleasure and a privilege to welcome you to the 23rd Research Postgraduate Symposium (RPS), which has been held annually since 1996 at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong.

The theme of the symposium this year is “Challenging Preconceptions, Unleashing Medicine”.  Looking at the past few years, we have seen tremendous leaps in medical sciences, with notions once held as absolute truth being challenged time and time again.  With this, new breakthroughs have emerged, and creative solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems have started to transform the way we view medical sciences.  Keeping this in mind, we have decided to revamp this year’s RPS with the introduction of RPS+, a set of fringe events that explores the various aspects of science beyond experiments and data.  Hong Kong is a melting pot of cultures and heritage, a place where worlds collide and East meets West, where great minds meet and amazing happens on a daily basis, and the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine is no different.  We are hence honoured to have three distinguished scholars from around the world, who are some of the top individuals in their fields, travelling to our faculty to share their knowledge and experience.

The aim of this symposium is to provide research postgraduate students the opportunity to present their work within the faculty’s research community.  We hence encourage researchers across the faculty to put a short pause on your experiments, and to immerse yourself in this three-day event, to firstly appreciate the amazing work done by our faculty’s young researchers, who are the backbone of research in the faculty.  We also encourage you to get involved in the collaboration, scientific discussions, and broadening of scientific knowledge through this symposium, all of which are crucial for unleashing the potential of our research.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude for the support provided by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, and all the generous sponsors who have made this symposium possible.  We also wish to give special thanks to Professor Danny Chan, Ms Kimmy Liu, and Mr Anthony Lo for their tremendous help organizing this event.

We hope that you will enjoy this year’s symposium, in which we can expand the inter-disciplinary collaborations to unleash the potential in all our research.
