Oral Assessment Guidelines

  1. There are a total of 37 oral presentations given in 8 sessions. Each presenter will be given 10 minutes for presentation and 2 minutes for Q&A.

  2. The top three presenters will be selected by the adjudicators and will be awarded with a trophy and a cash prize.

  3. We are honoured to have a total of 8 adjudicators, of which 5 will be attending all 8 sessions, while 3 will have partial-attendance.

  4. Each adjudicator will grade the presenters using the following scheme:

Student name:
Oral presentation number:
Score
Presentation style, organization and visuals
Oral presentation skills (speech clarity, tempo, volume) 1 2 3 4 5
Visual appeal of the slides (attractive and balanced) 1 2 3 4 5
Legibility of text, figures and tables (simple, illustrative) 1 2 3 4 5
Ability to handle Q&A session 1 2 3 4 5
Timing 1 2 3 4 5
Presentation content
Introduction/background of research comprehendible for outsiders 1 2 3 4 5
Methods and results explained in appropriate detail for presentation 1 2 3 4 5
Data well summarized and concluded 1 2 3 4 5
Originality and scientific merit 1 2 3 4 5
1 = poor, 5 = excellent

  1. Using the above scheme as an aid, each adjudicator is asked to form their personal top 5 of best presenters with ranking.

  2. Adjudicators will have time (~20 minutes) for a discussion after the last oral presentation session on December 3 to compare their lists of top 5 best presenters and finally select the winners of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize.

  3. Please note: the faculty advises the adjudicators to take the top 5 ranking of the full attendance adjudicators as the main judging reference of the presenters. The ranking from the partial attendance adjudicators will be used to further differentiate between the students.
