FOREWORD

It gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the 20th Research Postgraduate Symposium (RPS). This is an event organized by students, for students, at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong, and has been held annually since 1996.

Our theme this year is “Precision Medicine – Personal to Global Healthcare” and we are honoured to have three overseas experts on the areas of Precision Medicine, Translational Molecular Pathology and Neuroscience to provide keynote lectures and adjudicate our student presentations. This year, we are happy to have 37 oral and 102 poster presentations, of which the best presenters will be awarded with attractive prizes provided by the Faculty.

The RPS aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and would like to encourage collaborations between different disciplines of the research centres within the Medical Faculty. Events like this, where students and researchers from different departments and institutions are gathered for the enrichment of knowledge, are rare. This symposium therefore creates a unique and exciting opportunity for students to present and share their work.

This year marks the second year that the RPS is organized by a Student Organizing Committee (SOC). We are a group of six research postgraduate students who have worked passionately to present you with an exciting and inspiring symposium. In addition, as an effort to encourage interactive student participation, we have organized the first ever RPS Pre- and After-Party. We hope that events like this will enrich our program and highlight the fact that postgraduate studies should not only advance our research abilities, but also our communication and networking skills, in order for us to become well-rounded scientists.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude for the encouraging support from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, as well as all our generous sponsors.

Thank you to Professor Danny Chan, Ms Vikkie Chan, Ms Kimmy Liu and Ms Clare Wong for their tremendous help with organizing this event. We would also like to thank all the students who have submitted their abstracts, as well as the adjudicators.

Last but not least, we would like to thank you for participating in our event. We trust that you will find the 20th RPS a stimulating and rewarding experience and we wish you a fruitful and enjoyable time.
