HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine Presents
“Big Shots” Photo Exhibition in Celebration of 130 Years of Medicine in Hong Kong

16 Mar 2017

Hong Kong, 16 March 2017 – The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKU), hosted the opening ceremony for the “Big Shots” Photo Exhibition at the Hong Kong Central Library today. The ceremony was held on the HKU Foundation Day for its historical significance. Sir Frederick Lugard, the then Governor of Hong Kong, laid the foundation stone of the Main Building on the same day 107 years ago.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Ms Michelle Li, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Dr David Li, Pro-Chancellor, HKU, Professor Paul Tam, Provost, HKU, Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Medicine, HKU, representatives of the “Celebration of 130 Years of Medicine” Board of Overseers and Steering Committee as well as the curators of this exhibition. The exhibition is part of the yearlong celebrations that the Faculty is holding to mark “130 Years of Medicine in Hong Kong”.

The “Big Shots” Photo Exhibition consists of two sections. World of Doctors is a photographic journey featuring the works of renowned photographer Ducky Tse on the challenges and moments in the lives of 29 Faculty professors, alumni and students (see appendix for full name list). Doctors’ World, curated by Professor Richard Yu and Dr Leo KK Wong, is a collection of photographs taken by 32 alumni of the Faculty (see appendix for full name list). These images reflect how they see the world and what inspires them, including such interests as wildlife, nature scenery, city views and the people they have served during volunteer missions, and more. This exhibition is the first time that these visual imaginations have been brought together for display.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 17 March to 29 March 2017 at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library. It will also be staged at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre from 4 May to 30 May 2017. Part of the works will be exhibited at six other locations throughout Hong Kong between 1 April and 27 May 2017 (see appendix for all venues and exhibition periods).

“Photography provides an historic record and reflects on the passing of time. This exhibition opens with large prints using the old gelatin silver process that was introduced in the 1870s – a physical reminder of the past, set in the present. I share the deep respect that many Hong Kong people have for doctors and their great learning, professionalism and wisdom. What most people do not see, though, is that doctors are also ordinary people trying to live fulfilling lives. By capturing the different moments in the lives of the HKU’s medical and healthcare professionals and students, I not only see the dedication of these professionals to the vanguard of the medical cause, I also feel their passion for life and how they live their lives to the fullest, be it in the clinic, the classroom, health administration, at leisure or on the humanitarian front,” said Ducky Tse. The photographer spent over 600 hours following and capturing the daily lives of the 29 medical and healthcare professionals and students since September 2015.

“Our Faculty was founded 130 years ago. Throughout the years, our colleagues, alumni and students have altruistically devoted themselves to safeguarding the health of Hong Kong’s general public, and uniting the medical profession of Hong Kong,” said Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. “In celebrating our 130th anniversary, we want to make use of the lenses of a renowned photographer and our alumni to show the unseen sides of these committed professionals. The photographs show how they tackle challenges at work and leisure, and enjoy moments in their daily lives, as members of our community.”

About 130 Years of Medicine in Hong Kong
Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, established in 1887 and renamed the Hong Kong College of Medicine in 1907, was the territory’s first institution of higher learning. In 1911, when the University of Hong Kong was founded, it was amalgamated into the Faculty of Medicine as the University’s premier faculty.

The Medical Faculty is of course inextricably linked with the development of medicine in Hong Kong and the surrounding region while at once being intertwined with the city’s development. Throughout our history, students and staff have shared wisdom, spread compassion and showed commitment, for the advancement of the health and wellbeing of the Hong Kong people.

On the propitious occasion of the Faculty’s 130th birth year, we also celebrate the important anniversaries of and salute our longstanding hospital partners, who have grown with us and have shared in our achievements – Alice Memorial Hospital and the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation (130th), Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (95th), Tsan Yuk Hospital (95th), Queen Mary Hospital (80th), Grantham Hospital (60th), HKU-Shenzhen Hospital (5th), and the commissioning of Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital in the spring of 2017.

A wide array of celebratory activities, including academic conferences, reunions and outreach programmes, have been planned for the year, leading up to the finale of the Homecoming Dinner on December 17, 2017 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
