Professor Gabriel Leung, Dean of Medicine, inaugural Helen and Francis Zimmern Professor in Population Health and Chair Professor of Public Health Medicine at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), has been elected a Member of the US National Academy of Medicine (NAM). He was elected for “leadership in global health and medical education, and contributions to infectious disease epidemiology and control”. Election to NAM is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

“It is an immense honour joining the US National Academy of Medicine. The credit really belongs to my research team and collaborators whose collective effort has enabled our work to inform global health,” says Professor Leung.

Professor Victor Dzau, President of NAM, in his letter congratulating Professor Leung on being elected a Member, commented, “You are now part of a group of truly distinguished individuals, who have made important contributions to health, medicine, and science.” 

The US National Academy of Medicine is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine; the natural, social, and behavioural sciences; and beyond. It serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as an adviser to the US government and the international community.  Through its domestic and global initiatives, NAM works to address critical issues in health, medicine, and related policy and inspire positive action across sectors. NAM collaborates closely with its peer academies and other divisions within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Professor Leung is one of ten International Members elected to the Academy this year. His election is testament to his research and service to the advancement of knowledge and progress in medical science. It also affirms Hong Kong’s status as a major medical research hub globally.
