Effect of Regional Anaesthesia/analgesia on postoperative pain and other healthcare related outcomes

Programme(s) to which this project applies:

☒ MPhil/PhD ☑ MRes[Med] ☒ URIS

Postoperative pain remains a significant challenge in surgical care, impacting patient recovery, satisfaction, and overall health outcomes. Regional analgesia/anaesthesia (RA) techniques have emerged as effective strategies for pain management, potentially reducing reliance on systemic opioids and their associated adverse effects. However, the best analgesic strategy to enhance regional nerve blocks (eg types of additive adjuncts such as liposomal bupivacaine, dexamethasone, or nerve catheters) remains unclear. Evidence regarding the effect of RA on other health related outcomes such as persistent opioid use, length of hospital stay, and postoperative adverse outcomes has not been established. The project aims to answer these questions using various methodologies including performing systematic review/meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials and retrospective cohort studies (eg using the Clinical Data Analysis and Reporting System (CDARS) database).

By synthesizing existing evidence and analyzing clinical data, this project seeks to provide insights into the clinical evidence on RA for perioperative pain management.
