The inaugural event of the Critical Care Ethics Fireside Chat series, held on 20 January 2025, explored the intersection of ethics, humanities and medicine. We were honoured to have Professor Fan Ruiping, Chair Professor of the Department of Public and International Affairs at City University of Hong Kong, as our guest speaker. Professor Emmanuel Cheung, from the Critical Care Medicine Unit, hosted the event, which attracted about 20 participants.

Contemporary intensive care medicine blurs the boundaries between life and death, transforming our understanding and management of critical illness. While it offers hope to gravely ill patients and their families, it also generates uncertainty and a moral burden for those who provide life-sustaining treatment
