Message from the Interim Director
Welcome to the new School of Clinical Medicine, where our diverse range of clinical specialties are brought together under one roof to enhance competencies and advance clinical and biomedical research for the benefit of our patients and community health.
The specialities under the School's auspices include the Departments of Anaesthesiology, Clinical Oncology, Diagnostic Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine & Primary Care, Medicine, Microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Pathology, Psychiatry, Surgery and the recently established Critical Care Medicine Unit. Some of these have histories stretching back to the founding days of HKUMed and many include world-class scientists who have made important contributions to medicine and health, most recently and prominently on COVID-19.
The School's formation comes as a major expansion is underway at HKUMed in terms of student numbers, programmes and facilities. The cross-fertilisation and efficiency gains resulting from the amalgamation of clinical disciplines ensures more effective teaching and learning and best use of resources, particularly as we expand the variety and number of clinical settings under the HKU Health System network.
Growth also means greater opportunities and there are exciting career offerings and options for all staff, be they in academia, research or administrative and technical support. The wider vision for the School is to form a strong partnership with the other very successful schools in the Faculty vis-à-vis the School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Nursing and School of Chinese Medicine to improve the university's global reach.
The School embraces diversity and encourages each unit to retain its distinct identity, while also sharing the same ambitious goals for academic and clinical excellence.
