Announcement of New Deanery Team

27 Jul 2018

Dear colleagues

I am pleased to announce the new Deanery effective August 1, 2018, as we complete our first five-year term.

Professor Gilberto Leung, Tsang Wing-Hing Professor in Clinical Neuroscience of the Department of Surgery, will succeed Professor CS Lau as Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning). Gilberto has been an Assistant Dean who has effectively shepherded the student affairs then latterly admissions portfolios in the Teaching & Learning team. CS will return to the Department of Medicine full time and also focus his energies leading the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He has kindly agreed to continue overseeing the upcoming MBBS quinquennial accreditation exercise in the autumn.

Professor WK Leung, Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professorship in Gastroenterology of the Department of Medicine, will succeed Professor Anskar Leung as Associate Dean (Human Capital). Wai-keung has served as Assistant Dean in the Research deanery overseeing platform technologies. Anskar will return to the Department of Medicine to begin his Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowship.

Professor Joseph Lui, who has been a member of the Deanery as Clinical Director of HKU Health System since 2015, will take on additional responsibilities as Associate Dean (Clinical Affairs), succeeding Professor WL Law. Wai-lun will take early retirement and continue his clinical career at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital.

Professor SY Leung, YW Kan Professor in Natural Sciences and Chair of Gastrointestinal Cancer Genetics and Genomics of the Department of Pathology, and Professor YS Chan, Dexter HC Man Family Professor in Medical Science of the School of Biomedical Sciences, will continue to serve as Associate Dean (Research) and Associate Dean (Development & Infrastructure) respectively.

Given the burgeoning size and scope of the Faculty, and the anticipated expansion on all fronts in the coming few years, we have just launched a global search for a newly established full-time Executive Associate Deanship (EAD) in Strategy and Operations, as approved by the University’s Senior Management Team. The EAD will provide strategic leadership and administrative oversight for budget and finance, resources management, information technology and other support services. The incumbent will also be responsible for optimising the Faculty’s operational efficiency in the increasingly competitive higher-education environment nationally and internationally, in tandem with the University’s SMARTER initiative.

Each of the Associate Deans will be announcing her/his team of assistant deans soonest under separate cover. During these next few weeks when the various teams of assistant deans will be finalised, let me issue an open invitation to colleagues who may be interested to be considered for appointment to these positions in the different portfolios. This is part of a deliberate effort in grooming the next generation of academic leaders, so please approach the Associate Deans concerned if you are interested. I intend to put in place a systematic rotation programme to allow younger colleagues full exposure to the various deanery functions over the next few years.

Let me take this occasion to sincerely thank each and every member of the deanery, past and present, since 2013; and more generally for the generous support you have all shown me and my team. Along with my new decanal team, I look forward to learning from and serving you in the coming five years.

All very best wishes for a restful and happy summer, and see you back on campus in September, refreshed and energised for the new academic year.

Gabriel
