Abstract

Objective

To analyze the growth direction of endometrium in adenomyosis

Design

Uterine tissue samples from 22 patients (cases) with histologically confirmed AM and 12 (controls) with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia were collected. The whole section of smooth muscle was stained by HE to observe the morphology of endometrial-myometrial interface (EMI) and infiltration of endometrium into smooth muscle;

Results

EMI in AM group was irregular with endometrial glands infiltrating deeply into the myometrium, while in the control group, it was always smooth or with small waves. The mean area per low power field of endometrium infiltrated into the inner 1/3 myometrium was much higher than that in the outer 1/3 myometrium(0.92±0.50 mm2 vs 0.27±0.19 mm2, p<0.05)

Conclusions

The study shows the change of endometrium grow direction and supports the invagination theory of the basalis endometrium into the myometrium from the morphological point of view.
