FEATURE From Stormy Seas to Blue Horizons: 100 Years of the Department of Medicine The origins of modern healthcare in Hong Kong are deeply ingrained in the history of HKUMed, and indeed, of the city itself. From humble and often trying circumstances, the Faculty’s professoriate staff and units have worked tirelessly to meet Hong Kong’s needs, while also advancing medicine through research and scientific enquiry. A key contributor in all of this has been the Department of Medicine, a truly multidisciplinary centre with 12 divisions that plays a critical role in the education of all medical students at HKU, in the continuing education of medical professionals, and in the management of hospitals both in Hong Kong and, more recently, Shenzhen. 2
