Research • The HKU-HA Data Collaboration Laboratory was launched early this year, which is expected to support a wide range of digital health and big data research going forward. • The Cryo-EM facility will begin operating in 2023 as a platform to develop impactful drug and clinical therapeutics discoveries. • By about 2025, the University Block at Grantham Hospital is expected to be completed, housing the Centre for Clinical Innovation and Discovery and the Institute for Cancer Care, which will provide dedicated facilities for oncology translational research, including advanced -omics and cell-based treatments. • Research impact would be further promoted through translational transdisciplinary research: the Centre of Cancer Medicine was recently established in October 2022 to enable staff from across departments and schools of HKUMed to better understand and combat cancer; HKUMed is also working with the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Dentistry to set up a Research Hub for Biomedical Engineering, and with the Faculty of Social Sciences to set up an Institute of Data Analysis and Management. Pursuing Major Research on Lupus Professor Lau is a co-principal investigator of the Centre for Translational Stem Cell Biology, which has received HK$284.6 million under Health@InnoHK. His work there will deepen knowledge about systemic lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune disease that affects predominantly young females and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The first aim is to classify and categorise patients with different types of lupus and try to develop their blood cells into stem cell platforms so their immune cells can be studied in more detail. The team will also use patient stem cells to grow organoids – tiny organs – to try to understand how the patients’ immune systems are causing disease in such organs as the kidneys. And they will look at immune deficiencies to understand the role of different immune cells in defence against infection. This long-term project is expected to result in, among other things, the identification of new cellular or molecular targets that can be further investigated as possible biomarkers or therapy candidates. 21 HKUMed News Winter 2022
