I was only hitting the tip of the iceberg as I knew there was still so much more America had to show. Each city I had visit had their unique flair and demonstrated an integration of different types of people and their cultures. Not only have I gained a better appreciation for their values and traditions, these experiences have helped sculpt me into becoming a better person, reminding myself to be more open-minded, patient, and understanding. They have left marks in my memory that have changed me and are mine to keep forever. For the most part of my life, I have been academically focused, on Medicine specifically, and rarely took the time to even think about detouring on to other subjects or hobbies. It is though I have been living through a microscope, always magnifying to the most minute of details, failing to ever step back and appreciate the rest of the world around me. Unsurprisingly, one of my main goals I had set for myself at the beginning was to diverge outside of Medicine. I thus took a wide array of courses at UCSD, from Psychology, Spanish to Opera. This has since sparked my interest for musical theatre as I enjoyed weekly musical live streams this year. Life is an adventurous and exciting journey that may take you on tolls or long-winded routes, but ultimately, the destination can be reached. Absorbing everything along the way, from the picturesque scenery and connecting with the local culture, as well as adapting in unfamiliar situations, have altogether moulded the success of my quarter in the U.S. Across the whole year, one of my biggest takeaways is personal growth. I have gotten to know myself better. Compared to the same time last year, I have definitely changed, in terms of mind set, personality, perspective, and simply as a person. I learnt that is is acceptable to be an emotional person, to dedicate self-care, and how to plough through difficult times. Most importantly, I learnt that I still have a long way to go. Although I have displayed the more positive memories, I realized that the greatest degree of growth stems from ones that are less so – ones that were not a photo-taking moment. Even though such change cannot be shown in a picture or two, nonetheless, I am thankful for all these experiences, for bringing in a different perspective on life. 2019—2020 was a significant year and a milestone, in terms of my journey as a medical student, personal growth and whole life. I went on adventures that I will never get to experience again, learning new things every day, making every moment worth while. I think it is hard to pinpoint exactly my most favourite activity from the whole year, as all these experiences, both good and bad, have helped shape me into becoming a better version of myself. We are constantly influenced by our surroundings, our observations, our experiences. Though not always positive, the negatives are not to be neglected and altogether, the combination of the two cultivate ongoing growth and a degree of maturity. These puzzle pieces are constantly influencing our next steps as we continue to pave our road of life. I conducted my internship during the initial period of the global pandemic of the COVID-19 virus. At the time, there was a lack of information directly addressing pregnant women and infants, both groups with a weak immune system. The West had not been affected at the time, and there was insufficient information directing mothers what precautionary measures to take. This was a difficult time for all, as depicted by the shortage of masks and how supermarkets were swept clean. As time then went on, there are now guidelines readily available. Getting to know these clients and their stories behind was extremely touching for me, as they walked on paths I never could have imagined and as I empathised for them and understood from their point of view.
