The programme aims to equip future clinicians, vets and dentists with skills to understand, critique and undertake biomedical research in the 21st century. A research is performed as the final project of the course. The precise mechanism of the amyloid hypothesis, despite accepted by a majority of researchers, is still not conclusive. Currently, research focuses on clarifying the exact role of different species of A β in AD. This research, therefore, focuses on differentiating toxicity of different A β species. Dimer/oligomer ratio calculated from the western blot showed oligomers in A β o samples. A cell death assay was performed does not confirm the individual toxicity of A β and A β o, and the difference in toxicity between A β and A β o. If a consensus of A β o produced, which is LMW, being non-toxic is reached, it may provide an alternate target for halting the progression of AD. Previous research mentioned A β secreted from genetically modified CHO cells. It was successfully replicated, establishing a protocol of giving CHO cells 24 hours without EDTA as the most efficient in A β production. It may provide an alternative method of producing NTE- A β, a species still covered in unknown. Cell viability assay showed splitting of cell death rate into 2 groups for neurons under CHO cell CM within each coverslip may hint two different mechanisms of neuronal damage. The toxicity of NTE-A β is not confirmed and may indicate a higher concentration is required to achieve toxicity, giving the possibility of a therapeutic effect by limiting its concentration in the brain. Although I have been overseas during family trips, I haven't really been overseas for long periods of time. Trying to actually live and experience in another place, living and managing chores by myself, and constantly interacting with people that are of different culture and ethnicity. I am afraid it may cause some kind of phobia when I wanted to experience other cultures in the future. I think enrichment year is a good opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and experience foreign cultures. This why I have initially decided to leave Hong Kong and study overseas for at least half a term. This year, to some extent, had not disappointed me. I learnt to be less afraid of foreign cultures. What I learnt the most, and think is the most impactful experience, is the learning culture overseas. People in Britain are keen to ask questions openly, and are very welcoming to questions. Moreover, they communicate with strangers with a welcoming attitude. This creates a drastically different learning atmosphere from the one I was used to in my secondary and university school years in Hong Kong. It gave me some inspiration in why Asians and Westerners typically have different mindsets.
