81 80 Khoo Jun Ren HKUWW Exchange Programme at KCL, UK Service/Humanitarian Work - Internship at IVHQ King’s College London is one of the UK’s most historic and prestigious universities. Based in the heart of central London, and with five London campuses, KCL is one of the largest multi-faculty universities in the UK. Among the 5 courses that I took, the French class was definitely the most interesting one. French, regarded as a romantic language by many, was quite difficult to learn. But our teacher was a funny guy and it had been a pleasure for me to attend French class twice a week. Now I am able to read and analyse short, simple texts written in French. 5AALFR11 – French Stage 1: 5BBY0201 – Cell and Molecular Physiology: 5BBL0227 – Introduction to Stem Cells: I enjoyed performing various experiments with my classmates and working out the results together during the practical sessions. It was a great opportunity for me to have a taste of how to carry out scientific research. Stem cells have great research potential for use in cell therapy. This course allowed me to gain more insights into the characteristics and manipulation of these undifferentiated cells. 6BBA3320 – Behavioural Science: The aim of the course was to provide an inter-disciplinary perspective for understanding human behaviour. Reading literature, searching for evidence and organizing the information I gathered were hectic, yet interesting. London is a lovely place. Wide selection of food, friendly people, lovely streets and convenient transport – simply perfect for student life. My exchange programme there was really fruitful and fascinating. Travelling around: The Marine Conservation project took place in Cairns, Australia. Together with a large group of volunteers, I participated in various activities to help protect and conserve the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem. Reef Monitoring: One of our tasks is to perform snorkelling within an assigned area to collect data on the species living in the Great Barrier Reef. I learnt a lot about the methodology of in-water surveying, and at the same time, appreciated the beauty of the nature. Sea Turtle Rehabilitation: Semester 1: Semester 2: We were trained to assist with the care of sick and injured sea turtles in the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. By studying their behaviour, I gained an in-depth understanding of each turtle’s specific case and rehabilitation requirements. Marine Debris Collection and Research : Marine debris is a significant threat to the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and is threatening the marine life. Therefore, we participated in large-scale clean-ups organized by local environmental organizations. We collected the marine debris using the equipment provided and sorted them into different categories.
