5 4 Research Attachment Preparing Future Clinician-Scientists Research Attachment provides students with the opportunity to engage in academic research activities in the field of medical and health sciences locally or overseas. This track, which involves a full-year or semester-long ‘Research Attachment’ comprising a prescribed course (“Research Induction”) offered by the Faculty, a research project offered by Principal Investigators and other self-initiated research projects, aims at preparing future clinician-scientists. 80+ Local and Overseas Research projects Service / Humanitarian Work Service work lacks the recognition it deserves, and therefore my experience at PathFinders means so much more to me. I believe it is only through interacting with the most vulnerable in our society, that one can learn to appreciate, empathise and understand the role we play as medical doctors. Ngai Nicole Tse Yan MBBS III Student Hui Ping Cheung Memorial Enrichment Scholarship for Medical Students 2019-20 Recipient The Faculty gave us a lot of choices for my Enrichment Year, and I decided to spend my whole year on a self- initiated service programme with Light and Life Association in Cambodia. I attached to a local clinic and a hospital in Phnom Penh to learn from local doctors and support their operation, and was given a chance to provide free medical service for the villagers. Lie Hao MBBS III Student Medical Faculty Enrichment Scholarship for Medical Students 2019-20 Recipient Serving the Community with Passion, Professional Ethics and Medical Knowledge Students are encouraged to participate in experiential learning involving service and humanitarian work. Activities may include, amongst others, community projects in health promotion, NGO attachments, humanitarian relief missions and/or voluntary servicing programmes. Students are required to take a prescribed course (“Introduction to Global Health”) which aims at preparing them as future humanitarian leaders in improving health and striving to achieve equity in health for all people worldwide. Students will then carry out service/humanitarian works in NGOs or voluntary service partners for one semester or full-year. 25+ Participating Local and Overseas NGOs Over the course of the Enrichment Year, I had the opportunity to work as a student researcher at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. This experience enabled me to gain exposure to several technological innovations such as machine learning, high-intensity focused ultrasound, robotic surgery and others. I also had the experience to take my learnings to international conferences in Denver, Colorado and Rwanda, Africa. Hon Wing Lam Nicole MBBS III Student Medical Faculty Enrichment Scholarship for Medical Students 2019-20 Recipient Undeniably, the Enrichment Year’s research attachment in cardiac imaging has built a valuable network and has offered me precious experiences in this area, allowing me to appreciate the complexity and essence of cardiology, which indeed encourages me to devote my future career in this field.
