55 54 01 Mechanism of health benefits The mechanism of the cardiopulmonary system and neuromuscular system during exercise is mentioned. It helps us know more about what's happening in our bodies during the workout. We also experienced different fitness test during lab sessions like Wingate cycling, VO2 max treadmill and muscle strength test. After that, there is a deeper study of how exercise can give advantage to our health. We have understood not only the cardio-protective effect as known previously but also the anti-oxidative effect, the anti-cancer effect and brain health effect. These benefits are explained more comprehensively and include those newly found mechanisms. 02 Statistics and evidence Through analyzing scientific research articles, we have appreciated the current statistical evidence about the association between physical activity level, sedentary behaviour and obesity with different diseases and health outcome. The physical activity guidelines adopted by different countries are also studied. 03 Practical Exercise prescription The principle behind exercise prescription can be summarized as FITT, which stands for frequency, intensity, time and type. We have learnt how to design an exercise training programme for athletes and patients who want to prevent, rehabilitate and manage their chronic disease. Different types of warm-up exercise and resistance exercise are demonstrated during practical sessions. There are also case study sessions that allow us to simulate the process of producing exercise programmes customized to different individuals. 04 Exercise nutrition We learnt that nutrition is a vital component mediating the health benefits of exercise. The underlying mechanism of nutritional requirement for people who engage in physical activity is mentioned. We also have a chance to design a sports diet for an athlete. I re-visted destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia and France, and explored new places (e.g. Stockholm & Austria)! This year marks the first time I stepped foot on the African continent, and I explored some national parks! A notable highlight was doing a nine-day road trip around Iceland with two HKU friends. A series of unfortunate events took place, which, though devastating, made the trip more memorable. I continued to play volleyball and joined the university team, but also tried a new sport – gymnastics! For the first time, I participated in a Spartan Race with my LSHTM friends and had an absolute blast. Compulsory for Degree • Basic Epidemiology • Introduction to Health Economics • Basic Statistics for Public Health Practice • Principles of Social Research • Issues in Public Health • Principles and Practice of Public Health Optional (By Choice) • Health Policy, Process and Power • Design and Analysis of Epidemiological Studies • Economic Evaluation • Evaluation of Public Health Interventions • Global Disability and Health Summer Project/Dissertation: Educational Training for Healthcare Professionals on Disability: A Systematic Review Academic Modules Undertaken I embarked on an academically rigorous and personally challenging journey in London. Not only was I able to expand my knowledge and skill set as it pertains to public health, but I also met individuals from all walks of life, and at different stages of their stellar careers. Though it did require some time for me to adapt, I ultimately was welcomed by an inviting and inclusive community. My learning experience mainly comprised of intriguing lectures, engaging seminars and discussions, with exams, presentations and assignments as academic outputs. The best part of my academic experience was being in my tutor group, Woburn, which formed the basis for academic support and friendly intra- course rivalry. Remarkably, our collective efforts won the annual Pub Quiz! Unfortunately, my year abroad was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many personal and academic plans had to be suspended, but online classes, assignments and exams still took place as scheduled. I also took on a Research Assistant role at the HKU School of Public Health with Dr. Michael Ni and his research team. I took on the role of IFMSA General Assistant for Asia-Pacific , which helped me gain new insights about wider health platforms and the complexities of global governance.
