The clinical experience was split into two sections, internal medicine and surgery, and each department was rotated for 2 weeks. Hematology • PUMCH receives numerous rare disease patients referred from the whole country. During the experience, there were 1 case of Clarkson disease, a condition that exist in approximately 150 patients globally. There were also cases of PCNSL, hairy cell leukemia and giant cell arteritis. This experience has motivated a great passion in internal medicine. It also reminds how medical knowledges can be used to deal with rare conditions. General surgery • PUMCH department of general surgery is split into hepatic surgery and thyroid surgery. I attached to the thyroid surgical team and had observer-ship for 2 weeks from the surgical consultation to the ward, and of course to the surgical theatre. Different techniques including extracervical techniques, robotic assisted surgery are observed. Programming This year allows me to learn some basic coding in R language and Phyton used for statistical analysis and bioinformatic analysis. Japanese learning Finally have some time to learn a language that I wanted to learn long ago but did not have the opportunity to do so, Learning new skills Looking back to Enrichment Year Although due to COVID, a lot of experience this year are cancelled. This includes clinical attachment in the Department of Gynecology in University of Oxford, the heart transplantation team in University of Cambridges. The experience this year motivates me to pursue a further research degree in the coming years. The one-year taught master in London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine is one of the oldest medical microbiology course in the United Kingdom. It aims to provide comprehensive knowledge and practical training in the spread of disease causation and diagnosis and treatment of pathogens significant to public health. It also provide genomic knowledge in diagnosis and pathogenesis of the micro-organisms. Teaching The core teaching is mainly split into knowledge in bacteriology and virology. Elective courses including clinical virology, molecular virology, pathologic genomes and advancing training molecular biology are taken. It provides insights from the recent coronavirus outbreak, to the historic Yersinia pestis outbreak in Hong Kong. It provides me with insights into the power of microbiology and how it can be used to treat patients. Research Projects The research “Investigate the interaction of Epstein Barr virus’s EBNA-LP with Sp100.” is conducted at the Department of Infectious Disease, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London (ICL). EBNA-LP is one of the first protein transcribed involved in transformation of the infected naive B cell. We used CRISPR- cas9 to generate an EBNA-LP knockout (LPKO) and with the luciferase assay to dissect the interaction with different Sp100 isoforms. The virus are also sequenced using Oxford Nanopore sequencing to study the transcriptome. Patient registry on Hemophilia in Hong Kong Hong Kong Student Association of Neuroscience The association is found in February, 2020. As part of the founding committee and the director of the research department, I am responsible for organizing research workshops and research opportunities in neuroscience for medical students in Hong Kong. Hemophilia is an X-linked congenital bleeding disorder characterized by a deficiency in coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) (in hemophilia A) or factor IX (VIX) (in hemophilia B) production due to gene mutations. The research project is a cross-sectional study on the Haemophilia patients using the data retrieved from Clinical Data Analysis and Reporting System (CDARS).
