51 50 Chiu Chi Ting Regina Sem1 – Overseas Exchange @ Sciences Po, Paris Exposure 01: Courses in Political Science, Journalism, Sociology & the French Language. – an opportunity to study subjects completely outside of my degree. Outcome: Expanded my view and understanding of the society. Regarding daily issues and the field of medicine from different perspectives. Gained insight into the barriers and significance of interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. Exposure 02: A French cultural experience. – chances to befriend French students and locals, experience the local customs, cuisine, art and the lifestyle (i.e. café & croissants everyday at 7am). Outcome: Newfound interest in the origin, history and significance of customs, artistic expressions etc. Cultural exchanges also enhanced my appreciation for my own Chinese identity and culture. Exposure 03: Independent living & settling into a foreign environment with language and cultural differences. Outcome: Enjoyed the freedom. At the same time, I’ve learnt responsibility, to prioritize, financial management, emotional management, to self-evaluate, problem-solving skills and the power of google translation. In summary, I have learnt how to better organize my life and my mind. Exposure 04: A research member in team Global Health, Sciences Po “Human Development Research Initiative” (HDRI). Outcome: A chance to research on my own chosen topic - the use of TCM in Europe, from a public health point of view. In addition, I was also able to participate in the production of a group paper with the title “Defining and Acting Global Health with an eye on 2030”. This allowed me to appreciate the role of Public Health (research, management and diplomacy) in the maintenance/ improvement of a country/ city’s economical and social standards. Sem2 – Research Attachment @ HKU Med Department of Surgery, HBP Research Department Exposure 05: Research in cancer immunology – reading papers, discussing with supervisors and participating in lab experiments on immune cells in cancer milieu. Outcome: A positive correlation between knowledge/ understanding and curiosity for the immune system. A positive correlation between experience/ exposure and interest. Better understanding of the rigorous, multi-dimensional and complex nature of investigations, which provides me with huge motivation for learning and obtaining more experiences. Also in awe with the advancement in technology to support medical research. Exposure 06: Working in an environment where clinical and basic science research unite in projects, a valuable feature of the outstanding standards of the HBP research department. Outcome: Gain insight into the efforts placed into establishing a research platform that has access to both clinical and lab- based material. Able to appreciate the value and potential of inter-/ intra-specialty information sharing, the benefits of such amalgamation and the bold, innovative thinking behind its establishment. Exposure 07: Working with animal models. Outcome: Recognise the importance of persistence and patience, which should go hand-in-hand with constant reflection and flexibility once challenges arise in methodology. Able to appreciate the elegant combination of experience, preparation through maximum reading and innovation in developing animal models to satisfy certain study conditions. Exposure 08: Writing a Literature Review. Outcome: Scientific evidence is often contradicting, especially in pioneering areas of research. Recognize the importance of understanding and evaluating study designs, data analysis and quality of data when comparing and referring to results in reviews. Gaining inspiration from identifying research gaps and recognizing the potential of new techniques. “If you never did you should.
