EY1920 Year Book

39 38 Semester 1: It was my first time doing research attachment, the experience gave me an insight into scientific research. I learnt different laboratory techniques such as using pipette correctly and accurately and preparing agarose gel myself. Lab skills acquired: - Extraction - Reverse transcription - Polymerase chain reaction - Gel electrophoresis - Sequencing Semester 2: I learnt a lot on marine organisms such as their appearances and habits and got my environmental awareness enhanced. Activities: - Reef monitoring - Sea turtle rehabilitation - Marine debris pick-up I went to Fitzroy Island and Green Island to conduct our water surveys through snorkeling. I also participated in marine debris clean-up on hot sunny days. It was tiring but meaningful as those rubbish may threaten the safety of the wildlife. Goal: Contribute to protecting the environment and collecting data through water survey for analysis of the coral situation at the Great Barrier Reef Semester 2: back to Hong Kong due to outbreak of COVID-19 pandemically - Hiking - Complete the remaining components of the enrichment year - Hang out with my friends after the 14 days of quarantine The left side show one of the photos taken during my hike in Hong Kong Island. The picture on the right shows one of the gels I did during the attachment. This is a multiplex PCR so multiple bands are shown and they indicate different type of enteroviruses. This method aims for quicker detection of enteroviruses. My goal at the end of the attachment was to successfully conduct a multiplex RT-PCR for detection of enteroviruses. The people there were very friendly and willing to teach and answer me whenever I had enquiries. I spent a great time working there. I learnt the importance of perseverance as getting the final result required multiple trials which took a long time. I also did scuba diving during our stay in Cairns. The right side shows one of the photos taken during the diving. Except all these colorful corals shown in the picture, I also saw many different marine organisms such as sea turtle, reef sharks, nemo fish. During my stay in Australia, I also got to know about the local culture and the back- ground history of the country. I was also glad to meet other volunteers from all over the world. I also travelled to other cities of Australia, witnessed the natural view there. I was also able to saw wild koalas and wallabies. Despite the inconvenience, the outbreak improved my health awareness, such as washing hands as shown on the right. I also realized the importance of flexibility as I had to react promptly to the sudden changes of the original plan during my stay overseas. This academic year is without doubt a fruitful year to me.
