213 212 Research Attachment, semester 1 Hong Kong current health expenditure has always been relatively low (5.9% of GDP) compare to other economics while it able to maintain its service quality by global standard. However, the public private imbalance is an issue recently and its sustainability is a question therefore burden of administration cost is worth investigated and now the trend of past 16 years is being investigated. And it will also be a good indicator for the future to evaluate the effect voluntary health insurances scheme. Statistic All financing schemes (FS) are showing an upward trend, and the private one is the most obvious rise. Although as a percentage of total spending in each FS, they all remained stable, it shows that previous measures of government trying to reduce admin cost has failed. Trends in cost over year were tested in a logistic regression model in R (programming language for statistical computing) While working on my own research topic, I also practiced R by helping Dr Quan on other projects that he was working on. Uganda, summer 2019 Self initiated volunteer program to a poor village in Uganda called Oluko, worked with Spanish doctors to provide medical services to local who only have doctors visit once or twice per year. Saw cases not common in Hong Kong eg. malaria Also had a chance to visit refugee camp where South Sudanese settled. Great experience as it was a valuable opportunity to help people in need although we do not speak the same language and reflected on the life that I have. Fig. 1 Test kit result showed positive to malaria Fig. 2 Post at Refugee camp entrance Fig. 3 Graph of total spending on governance and administration, 2000-2016 Fig. 4 Graph of administration cost as percentage of total healthcare spending, 2000-2016 Fig. 5 Working interface of R Exchange at Boston College, semester 2 I had an opportunity to exchange in Boston College, MA. I took courses on different areas, music because it is my personal interest, philosophy as I believe it may further improve my logic and understanding on ethics, public health for knowing more cultural difference in the US. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, I have witnessed how the healthcare system and public react towards a pandemic outbreak and my exchange terminated halfway through. I also took two extra courses from HKU on exercise and health after I came back which were EXSC 2008 Physical and Health Benefits of Exercise and EXSC 3017 Nutrition for Exercise & Health. The former one focused on impact of physical activities on health through different research and we also discussed guidelines given by the government, while the latter one focused on nutritional aspect to improve sports performance by calculating amounts of macronutrients. It aims to understand the benefis and risks for playing professional football and develop interventions to improve health. Findings are also translated in daily practices Fig. 7 Basketball game at Home Court of Boston College Great culture in the USA, college games are respected and well supported by local communities. Even neighborhood who did not study in the university would and watch , in my opinion it helps foster the habit of doing exercise and develop social identity. Yeung Shi Chun Matthew Yeung Timothy Tsz Ho My course I studied anatomy in the University of Glasgow this year. Courses I took were related to clinical anatomy, anatomical imaging techniques, and the anatomy of lower limbs. Although some of the areas were covered in my previous years of studies, the courses taught me some very interesting new knowledge, like important surgeries for the lower limbs. I also came across with the opportunity to try dissection in Glasgow, which was very different from my experience in Hong Kong, more autonomy was given to students to explore the human structure. Overall, it was a very fruitful year for me. Research project I had the chance to conduct a research project related to sarcopenia in colorectal cancer. The research aim was to investigate the relationship between psoas muscle index and total cross-sectional skeletal muscle index at L3 and clinical outcomes in patients with primary operable colorectal cancer. The pre-operative CT scans of a patient cohort were analyzed and the muscle areas of interested were calculated using a specialized software. This project gave me the opportunity to look at abdominal CT scans and understand how soft tissues and muscles look like on CT scans. It also gave me a hand on experience on how to conduct statistical analysis with SPSS, including the use of cox regression to analysis relationship of muscle index and patient survival. Results of the study showed that total cross-sectional muscle index at L3 is a better predictor of patient survival when compared with using psoas muscle index alone. Life The life in Glasgow broadened my horizon. I shared room with another boy from Slovakia, which was a very interesting experience for me. I managed to learn more about different cultures and how people from different ethical backgrounds can think differently. I also had the chance to improve my cooking skills as me and my friends were trying out different recipes during our stay in Glasgow. I also visited many countries with my friends, including Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary. The snow in Switzerland was particularly memorable. We went to Zermatt, which is a town known for skiing in the wintertime, the scenery was breathtaking, and the weather was very comfortable, definitely one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to in my life.
