205 204 Wong Yu Yan Wong Yuk Wai Constance Personal growth • First time pursuing studies year long away from home! • Drastic changes to my lifestyle, some of which I actually enjoy very much, such as being able to go anywhere in the city on a bike! • Made friends here who gave me a homely experience. We held potluck dinners, tried out campus clubs, staple cuisines of each others’ home culture and survived the -2ºC hailing weather on streets of Manchester on Lunar New Years’ Eve. Learning about imaging as a tool My programme: MSc Medical Imaging Science • Physical principles of imaging always interested me • Learning about the principles and applications of both clinically available imaging modalities and research-based ones • Understand how these features make imaging valuable to clinical decision making • I get the opportunity to work with first hand data in my dissertation project about tumour perfusion in glioma patients End of my year • Grateful that everyone around me were supportive and understood my decision to stay • Some even going as far to offering me supplies - They taught me about generosity and sharing even at difficult times • The pandemic is no doubt an important life lesson for all of us, but I felt that it particularly taught me to spend time with myself and make the most out of it. As this academic year ends and I return to Hong Kong, this experience will stay with me and steer me in the right direction in future life. Challenges to a biology student • Picking up algebra and calculus as foundation to more maths • Programming as a tool • With guidance from teachers and my peers from maths or engineering background Learn to manipulate numbers in creative ways: reveal what the human eye cannot see! Academic writing and presentation skills • Academic presentation which is a heavy component in all course assignments • The ability to report findings and add personal comments with good reasoning is built on good understanding of the paper • Provided useful feedback on my paper appraisal skills and the interactive nature allowed me to learn from my peers. • Adventures - plan along the way and adapt plans to changes • Try not to dwell in my comfort zone and actively plan new adventures when I have extra time on my hand, including a weekend getaway to Paris planned half a week before. • With good time management I really got to free my adventurous soul. Here are highlights of some of my adventures! Me time • Due to social distancing policies after COVID-19 hit UK, we were required to stay home • Discover new interests such as playing the guitar, video editing and digital drawing. • Learning that doing things that I enjoy is part of self care and life balance • Becoming even more important as human interaction is less possible during these times. Knee MR obtained in our MR course practical HRRT Brain PET Scanner at Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre, our main venue for lessons My selected paper presentation on intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) of coronary arteries Oxford Road Campus of UoM captured on film Lunar New Year with a twist: Greek cuisine goes with cheap wine and student-priced beer; wash it all down on a freezing winter’s night!
