EY1920 Year Book
193 192 Academic learning Cultural learning Biological neuropsychology I gained an in depth understanding on how the brain serves to guide our emotions, learning and behavior. Danish culture course I learnt about Danish history, architecture, food, music, film, mythology, sustainability and welfare. Danish welfare course I learnt about the Danish welfare system. It runs on the “universal” model, and all citizens receive free healthcare, free education, labour rights and cash allowances depending on your income. It is very different from the welfare system in Hong Kong. Danish language course I learnt enough fundamental Danish to order food at a restaurant or to buy things at the supermarket. But most importantly I made a lot of friends here. Philosophy of mental health I learnt about the three perspectives on mental health, its history, and how the question of therapy has become an interdisciplinary field. It is very eye- opening as it forces you to think about the fundamental problems within mental health and psychiatry. International health I learnt about different health systems in mostly low to middle income countries, such as Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam and Mexico. Each region has its own distinct problems, and it was interesting to learn how much influence health policy has on people’s well- being. Conclusion: - The main learning style in Denmark is very different from Hong Kong. They focused a lot on discussion and feedback, which I think was conducing to critical thinking - Professors and students are often on a first- name basis, which made asking questions much easier. - Being able to take courses outside of medicine was liberating. But the more important thing was developing the skills to critically think about things that are going on around you. As an exchange student… Studying is important, but experiencing new cultures is equally as important! The Danish way of living: sustainability - Everyone rides bikes - Communal recycling - Great urban planning such as the below projects… Copenhill: a ski slope built on top of an incinerator Orestad: a series of housing designed to be sustainable by allowing natural cooling and ventilation Cofoco: a series of restaurants who promote sustainability by building their restaurants out of recycled waste, using locally- sourced produce, and enforcing a no-waste policy Sustainability has become a culture in Copenhagen, and I was very inspired. I started to rethink my way of living in Hong Kong, and have started to live a greener life, such as recycling, using reusable coffee mugs, etc. Travelling I had the opportunity to travel to many places in Europe and the Middle East. I leant so much about different local cultures and history, such as the Holocaust, religious history and the Macedonian struggle. I also saw beautiful landscapes and scenery with my own eyes; although these images are all available on the internet, it is much more memorable seeing it in person. I have been looking into the activities of keratocytes! I have conducted some basic experimental tests such as fluorescence staining, viability tests, protein quantification and 3D model fabrication In vivo study Using a mice model, I have been as well looking into the mechanism of corneal pathologies. Sectioning and staining were done to look into the cornea in great detail! I had to take various courses including biostatistics, health communication, health policy, ethics, and Chinese medicine. These courses equipped me with new form of knowledge that is entirely different from the MBBS curriculum. Although I was required to finish multiple essays and presentations, taking part in these courses is definitely fantastic and interesting to me!!! Presentations Essays Leisure Hiking! Friends gathering~ In this enrichment year, I had a relatively less hectic schedule so I hiked with my friends to enjoy the scenery of Hong Kong as well as embracing the nature. Unlike the past 2 years when I buried myself into books, I had the opportunity to enjoy life and live a more relaxing life beyond laboratory sessions. I firmly believe that I was able to explore more about myself in this year and found things that I really enjoy. With more personal leisure time in this year, I was able to spend more time gathering with my friends and have enjoyable moments with them. Despite the outbreak of COVID-19, we still managed to meet up and celebrated our birthdays Trips Sadly, due to the COVID-19, trips planned in the summer were cancelled. Yet, I made to go on some trips with my friends and family in the Christmas, which makes life less dull...
